BIG BASH: Our cricket tipster The Edge previews Monday’s Big Bash game between Sydney Thunder v Hobart Hurricanes with a recommended BETDAQ bet.

MATCH OVERVIEW:

We start the last full week of Big Bash group stage fixtures with Sydney Thunder taking on Hobart Hurricanes at the Manuka Oval! The Sydney Sixers have gone clear at the top of the table since beating the Thunder in the Sydney Derby here last week, however the Thunder still sit in second and have a game in hand over the Sixers and the Melbourne Stars who have the same amount of points as them. This is a vital fixture for the Hobart Hurricanes as they have slipped down to second last in the table; however they are only four points behind Thunder in second.

Given how tight the table is the Hurricanes shouldn’t be too worried about being second last; however they arrive into this fixture having lost their last three. They performed well at home against the Melbourne Stars to only lose by ten runs chasing 183/6 however their batting has failed to fire for the last two games with scores of 128/8 and 139/5. A similar type of score here would see the Thunder win at a canter.

Indeed, the sides met very recently at the Perth Stadium which saw the Hurricanes post struggle to chase 167/5 with only 128/8. The Thunder can improve too, as only Khawaja only fired that day. If Hales, Ferguson and Billings come to the party today then it should be one way traffic.

WEATHER AND PITCH WATCH:

We had a lot of cricket here before New Year but the three games here recently seen first inning scores of 166/6 (chased DLS), 149/6 (chased) and 163/7 (chased). All three scores were chased relatively easily, and we did have 200+ scored here earlier in the year. It’s fair to say that scores around 165 or thereabouts just aren’t enough here and the side batting first will have to aim for at least 180+. Given the game data I’d definitely want to bowl first, even allowing for the good batting conditions and possibly conceding a big score.

RECOMMENDED BET:

We saw this fixture recently and the Thunder were well on top. Given the Hurricanes are on a bad run and their batting hasn’t been performing, I’m happy to back the Thunder here at 1.82. Their top three have been impressive in the tournament thus far and their bowling had the Hurricanes number last week. None of the Hurricane stars have been firing with the bat and I’d have the Thunder closer to 1.7.

IN-RUNNING STRATEGY:

This ground has pretty good batting conditions, but that looks to have favoured the team chasing bar an incredibly high score. Despite the good batting conditions, I wouldn’t be keen getting on the team batting first for a trade with BETDAQ Betting Exchange. It’s going back a month, but the Thunder chased down 178/6 here without their top three scoring either. Like I said above, I’d definitely want to aim for 180+ batting first as a score lower than that doesn’t look enough.

With that in mind, I wouldn’t take a position on the team batting first unless they were set for a high score with five overs left. That might be the best entry point. In terms of players, I’d be happy to support the top three for the Thunder and I’d be against the Hurricanes middle order along with Aaron Hardie in the bowling department.
