MANCHESTER CITY V ASTON VILLA

6pm A massive evening in the Premier League! All eyes will be on both Manchester clubs, however Aston Villa have to keep pushing for a Europa League spot (which was highly unlikely at the start of the season!) and Fulham are in a relegation battle later. We start the evening with Man City hosting Aston Villa at the end of a tough run of fixtures for Villa. They have had to play Chelsea, Man United, Liverpool when they had to field a U23 side and now Man City after having an enforced break with a Covid19 outbreak. It’s fair to say anything from this fixture will be a bonus, and they’ll be hoping to get back to winning ways against Newcastle in their next fixture.

It’s hard to see anything but a Man City win here. The markets agree, with City trading as short as 1.27 on BETDAQ Betting Exchange. You can see by looking at the xG figures that Man City have really hit form in recent weeks. It’s just at the right time too with a busy fixture list and Liverpool dropping points. You can see why they have gone odds on to lift the title, and they’ll go top when they win their game in hand over Man United. Villa could easily be short of fitness for this clash given their training ground had to close due to Covid19 and with City hitting form I feel we’ll see goals from them here. The 1.5 goal handicap is temping but I’m going to take a chance at 2.74 for City to cover the 2.5 goal handicap.

MATCH STATS

  • Manchester City have won 14 of their last 15 Premier League home games against Aston Villa (L1), including each of the last 10 in a row by an aggregate score of 33-4.
  • Since a 3-2 Premier League victory at Villa Park in September 2013, Aston Villa are winless in their last nine meetings with Man City in all competitions (D1 L8).
  • Man City have won their last five Premier League games, shipping just one goal in the process. It’s the longest winning sequence by a team so far in the competition this season.
  • Aston Villa have won five of their eight Premier League away games this season (D1 L2), as many as they had in their previous 49 on the road in the competition (D8 L36).
  • Man City have won their last 10 Premier League matches played on Wednesday, the second longest run of victories on this day of the week in the competition after Tottenham, 11 wins between December 2016 and January 2019.
  • Man City have conceded 13 goals in 17 Premier League games this season, an average of 0.8 per game. Only in their two title winning seasons under Pep Guardiola (0.6 in 2018-19, 0.7 in 2017-18) have they had a better ratio in the competition.
  • Manchester City have conceded the fewest Premier League home goals this season (7), while Aston Villa have shipped the fewest on the road so far this term (5).
  • Man City’s Sergio Agüero has scored 10 goals in just seven starts against Aston Villa in all competitions, including a Premier League hat-trick against the Villans in a 6-1 victory last season.
  • Man City’s Kevin De Bruyne has provided more assists in all competitions than any other Premier League player this season (15), with his assist for John Stones’ opener against Crystal Palace last time out his 100th in total for the Citizens.
  • Jack Grealish has been directly involved in 12 goals in 15 Premier League matches for Aston Villa this season (5 goals, 7 assists), the most by a Villa player in their first 15 games of a top-flight season since Dalian Atkinson in 1992/93 (9 goals, 3 assists).

FULHAM V MANCHESTER UNITED

8.15pm If Man City beat Aston Villa earlier in the evening, which they are expected to do, United will start this fixture in second and if they want to have any chance of lifting the title they simply have to win games like this. They can’t slip up against sides in the relegation zone; however we’ve seen it happen too many times with United in recent years. Perhaps this year is different, but they need to prove it. They performed well in their 0-0 draw against Liverpool at the weekend, and it will be interesting to see can they break down this Fulham side who have been keeping games very tight lately.

Fulham have had under 2.5 goals in their last six in all competitions, while United have had four in a row with unders in all competitions. I’m surprised to see under 2.5 goals odds against here. United haven’t exactly been banging in the goals for fun and I don’t expect many from Fulham either. I can see a very cagey game with only a goal in it – Chelsea and Spurs were only able to score once against Fulham very recently and United have been grinding out wins rather than blowing teams away. I’d have unders odds on – I have the complete opposite view of the market on this market, and I’m happy to take the value on offer.

  • Man Utd have won their last four away Premier League games against Fulham, by an aggregate score of 12-1. The Red Devils had won just four of their first 10 visits to the Cottagers in the competition (D4 L2).

  • Man Utd striker Marcus Rashford has scored in his last two Premier League appearances in London, scoring as many goals in those two games as in his first 19 games in the capital (2). The last Red Devils player to score in three consecutive league games in London was Wayne Rooney in November 2014.
