3rd ODI INDIA v ENGLAND: Our cricket tipster The Edge previews Sunday’s deciding 3rd ODI between INDIA v ENGLAND with a recommended BETDAQ bet.
MATCH OVERVIEW:
This has been a wonderful tour, and we have a fantastic finish on Sunday as we have an ODI series decider! The Test series went to the last Test, the five game T20 series went to the final T20 at 2-2 and now we go to the final ODI with the sides locked together on 1-1. England have done superbly well on this tour so far, and while they deserve to come away with something, India will have something to say about that!
As I noted in my preview before the 2nd ODI, England should have won the 1st ODI and given that they managed to chase down 337 and made it look easy, we have to assume a par score is over 350. They chased 336/6 in 43.3 overs! Perhaps even 400 is par. England traded around 1.15 in the 1st ODI when chasing 317 only to suffer a dramatic collapse. Once again, you’d definitely want to bowl first if you won the toss. The wicket looks pretty friendly for batting and both batting line-ups look in excellent form.
The England openers started well again on Friday and that is so important on this wicket. The Indian openers failed and with the conditions as they are, you can really do some serious damage here towards the end of the innings when the openers give you a solid base. India had a century from Rahul, but that wasn’t good enough as Bairstow hit 124 runs from 112 balls and unfortunately for Ben Stokes he came up one run short of a century with 99 from 52 balls. Roy, Bairstow, Buttler and Stokes all look in good form and I expect another very close game between two excellent sides.
WEATHER AND PITCH WATCH:
With Covid19 changing the world, we actually have some different tactics with cricket now. Usually we would move to a different ground and have different conditions – however we know what’s coming here now. We have had 317 and 336 scored in the first innings here, and both scores have looked short of par to be honest. I know India would the first game but England collapsed from a superb position and traded very short in-running. I definitely wouldn’t want to bat first, but it would be interesting to see could England go past 400 in they did bat first. They attack everything! I wouldn’t be surprised to see 350 chased successfully, but the main point to get across is what an advantage chasing is at this ground.
RECOMMENDED BET:
I’ve lost count how many times I have said this but there is very little between these sides and England look worth backing here at 2.12. We have landed both our bets in this series with India winning the first one and England cruising to victory at 2.5 in the second ODI. I thought the loss of Archer would be a massive factor but with batting conditions so good everything focuses on the batters here. I would have the game 50/50 at best, with a slightly tilt towards England given the form of their batting line-up and the 2.12 looks the value call. Even if England were to bat first, you’d fancy them to get a very big score even though chasing is an advantage. And in fairness, they should have the series won given the position they threw away in the first ODI.

IN-RUNNING STRATEGY:
While I fancy England to get the job done and they do look the value pre-off at 2.12, the main trading angle on this game has to be the team chasing. England have made batting look very easy (at times!) when chasing, and I know they collapsed in the first ODI however they still traded 1.15 which is good from a trading point of view. I would focus on trades on the batting side, always keep the chasing side on your side from a trading point of view. It doesn’t make sense to ignore the team batting first as they will likely score runs – India did very well when setting 336, England just chased it easily.
Batting conditions are very good and helpful for chasing, while a heavy dew is never far away in India so look out for that. With a dew, it will be very difficult for the bowling team to defend any score if the team chasing has a good platform. The England batters look in excellent tough, especially the openers and I would be keen to support them given how much they can move the market. Both middle orders look in good touch too, but India have a stronger middle order and that’s where most of their runs will come from. This game is all about trades on the batting side for me.
