GOSDEN’S £4MILLION TREBLE
Good Gosden! After Henry De Bromhead’s record-breaking treble at Cheltenham, John Gosden yesterday landed three big hits 4,500 miles apart between Doncaster and Meydan.
Teenager Benoit De La Sayette on Haqeeqy won Doncaster’s Lincoln Handicap (3.10 race) while 50-year-old Frankie Dettori took the Dubai Turf Group 1 at Meydan (3.30 race) on Lord North 20 minutes later.
Gosden, mentor of both jockeys, then completed a Dubai double and one of the Saturday trebles of all time when Mishriff won the very next Dubai event, the Sheema Classic, under David Egan.
Apart from the boost to Benoit, the Lincoln was a godsend to the trainer’s own son, Thady, now registered as joint trainer.
The amazing trans-world hat-trick was worth in the region of £4million. This from the man who took Enable to £9.5million in earnings in 2020.
As lockdown began at this time last year, my own bit of forecasting was to put you in touch with another young jockey, Pierre-Charles Boudot.
He won big time for us as we were forced to bet on French and German races, and became French champion jockey with 219 winners, 84 clear of his nearest rival.
He has had such a recent run that he is currently 40 ahead this year with 77 winners already.
So rapid has been their climb to fame that, even a few weeks ago, anyone who wanted a treble that Rachael Blackmore, Pierre-Charles Boudot and Benoit De La Sayette would be the jockey headline makers in March would have had the layers queuing up to accommodate a bet at hundreds to one.
ANNANDALE NOT FOR CATCHING
⭕ 2.30 Doncaster By coincidence, Benoit De La Sayette reappears today at Doncaster on Chateau d’If, a winner in November on very soft ground for Pierre-Charles Boudot.
The penalty for that success is negated by Benoit’s 7lb claim but we can only guess whether Chateau d’If will cope with the firmish terrain on Town Moor, with his stable out of form (no win for 109 days).
Roger Teal, whose last runner was a winner on Friday, has booked James Doyle for Knowwhentorun, by Mayson who gets top-of-the-ground winners.
He has been a strong order for this along with Richard Hannon’s Sounds Like Thunder but Hannon is a modest 1-19 and his last two favourites have both been unplaced. Sounds Like Thunder eased again when the rain did not come overnight.
⭕ 3.40 Doncaster Charlie Appleby has not had the early-bird start that he usually has. He’s 1-11, and one of his losing pair at Doncaster yesterday was beaten favourite.
Tambarrada was 2-2 on AW at Lingfield in January and could complete the hat-trick on turf, bred to step forward as a son of Dubawi out of a Shamardal mare.
But, apart from the red flag of stable form, his January jockey, Adam Kirby, reported that he thought the three-year-old would need cut in the ground when moving on to turf.
Annandale has bags of stamina in the pedigree and, combining that with the penchant for front-running among Mark Johnston horses, I can see him playing catch-me, in receipt of 13lb from the favourite.
FALLS A BIG-VALUE NAP AT 9.4
⭕ 4.50 Doncaster Richard Kingscote (42 winners) has edged in front of Hollie Doyle (41) at the top of the AW jockey’s table and his mount in this one, Lincoln Park, won well at Southwell but is another who preferred soft-heavy on turf.
The money this morning was for Wentworth Falls, who has dropped to within a pound of his winning mark over the Doncaster CD on firm ground in June. I took BETDAQ 9.4.
⭕ 5.25 Doncaster David O’Meara has spotted that, before the gelding’s hurdles career, Endlessly was 2-2 under Jamie Spencer on the Flat (turf) when trained by Olly Murphy.
Fit from the Jumps, but with his best form on soft ground, Endlessly is an Early Bird who may not be at his best today. We’ll back him if the rains come; otherwise keep him on the list.
