IPL GAME 23: Our cricket tipster The Edge previews Wednesday’s game between Chennai Super Kings v Sunrisers Hyderabad with a recommended BETDAQ bet.

MATCH OVERVIEW:

The Indian Premier League hits Delhi on Wednesday amid rising Covid19 cases and some players choosing to leave the tournament. A lot of focus in the International news has been on Delhi because of the high number of cases there and the IPL has come out to say the tournament will continue. I’m sure it’s a tough decision, but with the Indian people in lockdown it does bring some joy for a couple of hours each day. That being said, the media has also shown photos of the players traveling to Delhi in full PPE gear and with the hospitals overwhelmed those resources could indeed be used elsewhere.

Nevertheless, the show goes on and I’m sure there will be more debate to come. CSK went top of the table after their impressive win over the RCB and they really improved their net run rate too. Jadeja was fantastic in the final over, and then with the ball afterwards, and if CSK can keep him in that type of form throughout the tournament they will be tricky to beat. I know he changed the game with the bat, but if his confidence stays high he could really make a huge impact with the ball, especially later in the tournament when the pitches are spinning.

Sunrisers Hyderabad have the opposite record to CSK, instead of winning four and losing one, they have won one and lost four. It’s fair to say they just haven’t got running in this IPL and their bowling has been a big issue. They were never a very flashy side with the bat, Baristow has improved them, but they always had very tight bowling to keep them in the game. That seems to have left them so far, and that will clearly cause them a lot of issues.

WEATHER AND PITCH WATCH:

This is the first game here so keep an open mind about conditions. Unlike Ahmedabad in the last two days, we do have some ground data from previous IPL seasons. This used to be a high scoring ground, but batting has got more difficult over the years. You can see that with the average score. It was 184 in 2017, 178 in 2018 and then 156 in 2019. Perhaps it was because the home side Delhi weren’t a good side back then, but you can even see it with the high scores and low scores. In 2017 we had 212 as the high and 161 as the low, 2018 saw 219 and 143 and then 2019 it was 187 and 115. Batting first seems to be an advantage here, but clearly we have had a huge break with Covid19 so I would definitely keep an open mind on conditions.

RECOMMENDED BET:

Chennai Super Kings are worth backing here at 1.84. After a terrible IPL last season, they have bounced back in style and everything seems to be working for them at the moment. Moeen Ali missed out against RCB but prior to his little injury he has been a great addition to the side for his batting and bowling. Faf du Plessis looks in superb touch at the top of the order and if Raina, Rayudu and Jadeja are smashing sixes then that takes all the pressure off Dhoni who might be past his best with the bat but he is still an excellent captain behind the stumps. Hyderabad have been bowling poorly and with CSK in good form with the bat, I’d have them shorter than 1.84.

IN-RUNNING STRATEGY:

As I said above, with this being the first game here it’s definitely a game to keep an open mind in-running on BETDAQ Betting Exchange. I would want to see a game or two here before fully committing to an in-running strategy, but there does seem to be a bias towards the side batting first here so keep that in mind. It’s very difficult given the gap in the schedule of course, but if the team batting first were going well and the wicket looked a little dry and slow then I would look to get on the team with the batting advantage.

I’d be keen to support du Plessis at the top of the CSK order as he looks in great touch and with the Hyderabad bowling being under par that makes sense too. I’d definitely want to be against the Hyderabad middle order – their top order has to get the runs and once Baristow is out I feel they don’t have the firepower to get a big score. If it comes to it and Dhoni doesn’t have support from an in-form Jadeja then I would happily take on Dhoni as he hasn’t done anything with the bat in a while.
