PERSUASION Charles Hills; 4yo. The ground is expected to be firm in June and this is one I like at a lower level for handicaps on a sound surface.
WALDKONIG John and Thady Gosden; 4yo; half-brother to Arc winner Waldgeist, dam a half-sister to St Leger winner Masked Marvel; made rapid progress this Spring, stepping up from handicaps to win the Gordon Richards Group-3 at Sandown; target Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot.
GRANARY TO GET THE DOUGH
⭕ 1.00 Brighton There’s a bumper eight-race card on the South coast and an early start too with the opener at 12.30pm.
Granary Queen looks a bet in the second race on the card. The Eve Johnson Houghton trained runner makes her handicap debut here and looks on a decent opening mark.
Crucially she seems to enjoy cut in the ground too and when seventh at Newbury last July she was only beaten 3 3/4l by the talented Isabella Giles when the ground was good so soft. Isabella Giles went on to win Group 2 and Group 3 races at Newmarket and Goodwood so the form looks rock solid.
Eve Johnson Houghton and Charles Bishop combined with a winner at Windsor last night – the final race was abandoned which was frustrating for DAQMAN as he had two bets in that race.
There’s precious little form amongst her rivals, so our only danger is bumping into a big improver. Neminos didn’t show much in three starts last season for Gary Moore but the three-year-old has since been gelded whilst the Ed Dunlop trained Billie’s Girl floundered on heavy ground at Yarmouth and will need to improve significantly for the first time blinkers.
VELOCISTAR FOR QUICK FOLLOW-UP
⭕ 4.00 Nottingham Three Hat Day is interesting for Michael Dods but despite a winner at Redcar yesterday his overall form is questionable at the moment. The Redcar winner has been his only success from his last 31 runners. Three Hat Day is also unproven on soft.
Of more interest on BETDAQ BETTING EXCHANGE is Velocistar who loved the soft ground when winning at Ripon on Saturday at 18/1 and is taken to follow up under a penalty for Josephine Gordon.
THE REAL DEAL
⭕ 6.35 Hexham The ground is heavy in places at Hexham so this three mile handicap chase will be a slog.
Conditions suit Real Armani though who is the only course and distance winner in the field and a dual one at that. One of those came in March on soft ground and he is preferred to the favourite Lawtop Legend whose form so far seems better over the smaller obstacles.
