CLASSIC TRIAL 1-2-3-4 MEET AGAIN
It’s surely a boost for Snowfall. Or can Mystery Angel really catch up by more than four lengths and turn the tables from the Musidora?
The Musidora 1-2-3-4 (Snowfall, Noon Star, Teona and Mystery Angel) are all now running in Friday’s Oaks, with the news that Mystery Angel will be supplemented.
It’s a bold move by trainer-find-of-the-season so far George Boughey to add the filly to the Classic field, following a gallop on the course at Epsom.
Mystery Angel has been in fine form at home since winning the Newmarket Pretty Polly but connections wanted to see how she might perform on the cambered and hilly Epsom switchback.
Albaflora has been supplemented for the Coronation Cup by Ralph Beckett on the back of her seven-lengths Ascot success last month.
Beckett hired Frankie Dettori for a job at Haydock yesterday and Kinross burst clear to win the John Of Gaunt Group 3.
O’BRIEN SPRINGS PRETTIEST FILLY
⚠️ HEADS UP: There’s a Classic in Germany and a champion miler in France today.. But does Aidan O’Brien have one unraced at Navan who we will be talking about when the current established stars have had their day.
⭕ 12.23 Dusseldorf Naas has a star contender this afternoon, even though Irish racing is at Navan. The Barouche Stud could land the German 1,000 Guineas with Libre, who has just a length to make up on the likely favourite, Reine d’Amour, in a recent trial at the track.
It was a big leap forward for Libre, who is by Exceed And Excel out of a half-sister to Barathea and Gossamer.
⭕ 1.15 Navan Aidan O’Brien goes for a hat-trick in this two-year-old fillies’ maiden. My man in the long Tipperary grass tells me this could be one we’ll be talking about for the next two summers, with her first Group 2 planned for the Curragh at the end of next month.
Prettiest is a daughter of Dubawi out of the Galileo mare Alice Springs, who won three out of four in 2016, including the Group-1 Sun Chariot.
⭕ 3.15 Longchamp British Champion Miler of last October (with Palace Pier only third), The Revenant gets the soft ground he craves for the first time this season in today’s Prix d’Ispahan, a race won by superstars Goldikova (2011-12) and Persian King (last year for Ballymore and Godolphin).
Skalleti is the likely favourite today after an Exbury-Harcourt double, which has him edging the champion by a couple of pounds in the ratings.
Charles Hills travels over with Group-3 winner Tilsit, and William Haggas will saddle My Oberon, who was beaten by Tilsit last July in a one-two at Goodwood, though that was on firm ground.
SHORT ALLOWED TO AVEN-GE DEFEAT
⭕ 2.05 Punchestown (Ladbrokes Chase) Just when I’d given up on him, Pont Aven almost won the Guinness Chase here at Punchestown in April at 40-1.
He has two ways of running but seems to like Punchestown so it’s the right move to bring him back here over the same distance, with jockey Adam Short given the chance by master trainer Willie Mullins to make up for that length-and-threequarters defeat.
Nicky Henderson sends over Dame De Compagnie, down the field in the Mares Hurdle at Cheltenham but trying to get back on track for her chasing career, which started well enough with victory at Ayr over Cornerstone Lad in January.
⭕ 3.57 Uttoxeter (Sir Stanley and Lady Clarke Challenge Trophy) Winner of the Grand National with Lord Gyllene, his father a disabled brewery worker; his mother a housemaid.
Sir Stanley was not out of the normal mould for a fortune hunter but his racecourse at Uttoxeter became a model for his group of tracks, Northern Racing.
After buying Newcastle, Clarke appeared on the first race-day in the Silver Ring, mounted a soap box and told the crowd he had checked out the facilities and was less than impressed, promising to put things right with investment. The crowd gave him a standing ovation.
