The Women’s tournament at Roland Garros has a much more open look to it as far as the betting goes with defending champion Iga Swiatek heading the BETDAQ BETTING EXCHANGE 0% MARKET.
Although she is favourite, I still think Swiatek could represent value ahead of her opening match on Monday.
The confidence she gained from lifting her first slam trophy is immeasurable and she is clearly at home on the clay surface.
Her domination of this event last year – not just her 6-1 6-2 defeat of Simona Halep in the final but the fact that she didn’t drop a set in the entire tournament dropping just 28 games.
She had a remarkable tournament in Rome recently – saving two match points in the third round and then recording an astonishing ‘double bagel’ 6-0 6-0 win over Karolina Pliskova.
It’s going to be tougher for her this year with world number 1 and former champion herself Ashleigh Barty back in Paris.
Barty missed the French Open last year due to travel concerns and could meet Swiatek in the semi-finals.
Barty makes no secret of the fact that her favourite surface is grass but she is clearly a force on clay too and in April won her first clay tournament since the French Open – winning the WTA 500 tournament Stuttgart with three wins over top 10 opponents.
On balance I prefer the claims of Swiatek but will look to include another bigger priced player as the Women’s tournament is in a transition period and no longer dominated by a very small number of players.
Aryna Sabalenka is in the third quarter (with Serena Williams) and starts her campaign on Sunday.
The Belarusian riding star arrives in Paris in great form having been a finalist in Stuttgart (beaten by Barty) and then reversing that form with a win in Madrid. She could well run deep into the tournament and makes appeal at around 8.4.
