GRAND PRIX: BROOME SWEEPS AWAY
Mopping up the French prizes. Aidan O’Brien, whose St Mark’s Basilica has won the 2,000 Guineas at Longchamp and the Derby at Chantilly, cleaned up at a third top venue yesterday when he landed his first Grand Prix de Saint-cloud.
In a brilliant ride by Colin Keane, Broome made all the running to give O’Brien a famous weekend, following Saturday’s Coral Eclipse with St Mark’s Basilica.
Despite the soft ground which left deep prints, Broome was not for stopping and won in a faster-than-average time.
After he’d outstayed the stayers, Arc second In Swoop (4th) and seven-wins-in-a row Baron Samedi (5th), it was left to the improving filly Ebaiyra (2nd) and Arc fourth Gold Trip (3rd) to stage a late run together, but Broome was always doing enough.
AFTERNOON PICK MUST BE MIDNIGHT
⭕ 1.45 Worcester After back-to-back wins last summer, Sizing At Midnight hit the same form depression as his stablemates. It was a second sad slump by Team Tizzard.
But the yard was back in good heart last month and Sizing Midnight showed something of his old self under a claimer, travelling strongly.
Harry Cobden, his winning rider three times up to last August, is back in the saddle today for his only ride at Worcester on Colin Tizzard’s only runner.

⭕ 3.55 Ayr Flying Moon landed a hat-trick over a mile in the autumn, including one here at Ayr and, with only a pound more, won again at Ayr a grade higher on the last day (so overall Ayr form 2101).
Last summer at this time, he scored over 1m 3f at Hamilton, so this afternoon’s 10 furlongs is unlikely to bother him, and he’s dropped back to class 6.
Lord Torranaga has never won on turf and Tundra has never been able to put back-to-back wins together.
Two Brothers failed in his first handicap and Green Believer, who makes his handicap debut, is related only to sprinters.

ANOTHER ONE TO ELEVATE SAFFIE
⭕ 4.15 Nottingham Three star girl riders, all claiming 5lb, clash in this big-field 10-furlong handicap.
Soller Bay (Ella McCain) is looking exposed, remaining a maiden after several near misses, but now stepping up in trip.
Komore (Laura Pearson), who won a handicap in class 6, was back to form in a Classified at Salisbury for Laura when upped to the 10 furlongs.
But the one I fancy is first-time-in-a-handicap Elevate (Saffie Osborne), who had three quick educational runs in May and June, one of them under Saffie, who went into my good books after riding a 6-1 winner (Dapper Man) for me at Haydock last week.
Ziggy enters calculations but his breeding suggests that he’ll do better over further, and will need a strong pace from – possibly – Ballycommon and Act Naturally to get into the race at the business end.

⭕ 6.45 Windsor The winner of this 2yo race last year went on to score at Goodwood (Group 2) and at Newmarket in the Middle Park (Group 1).
Majestic Glory catches the eye on breeding, an early foal by Frankel out of a Dansili mare, with Andrew Balding’s youngsters doing really well this season.
Hammaki is another well-bred colt (by Churchill), half-brother to winners at 1m 2f and further. If he does win this over 6f on debut, then he ‘could be anything.’

⭕ 7.15 Windsor Clarendon House has been running away from horses at a lower level. Can anything stop his climb from class-5 novice to this class-3 handicap?
A Sure Welcome is a standing-dish on the course, but has already been a winner, second and third here since the Spring, and now looks high in the handicap.
Charlie Fellowes looks more like it but a hat-trick in the autumn has him high in the handicap, a neck defeat at Chester the last day not helping him

⭕ 8.00 Ripon Assuming the grey Ridgeway tries to make all, as he did in first-time blinkers at Lingfield (turf), the beneficiary should be Kettle Hill, who ran too freely when the pace was weak on the last day.
The well-bred Kettle Hill was noted by racereaders last season as ‘crying out for 10 furlongs,’ and here is his chance at last, with potential improvement likely to take him to a higher level.
Highest rated of the three-year-olds, Leopardo, hasn’t won since his maiden, always a bad sign.
Rain is about which would suit Urban Violet (6th of 21 in a handicap at Royal Ascot on soft) but he may need more than the ‘light’ showers which are forecast.
