ASCOT SATURDAY CHAMPIONSHIPS: ANTE-POST SPRINT BET: Daqman’s daily countdown to the five British Championship races on Saturday follows up yesterday’s Long Distance revelations about Stradivarius with news this morning of a gamble last night on the Sprint but with the price still 12.0 in the BETDAQ Sportsbook ante-post.
MINZAAL GAMBLE: BETDAQ 12.0
⭕ 2.00 Ascot, Saturday (British Champions Sprint): A gamble with some bookmakers into 7-1, Minzaal is the sprint’s ‘hidden horse’, as big as 12.0 in the BETDAQ Sportsbook last night.
While Art Power, Dragon Symbol and Rohaan, who lead the betting – all rated 114 – have had 27 races altogether this year, Minzaal has had just the one. Yet he’s only 3lb behind them.
Minzaal, never out of the frame since his debut at Ascot, ran his last race there, too, his only start this year, dropped back to the minimum, slowly away on soft ground that was unknown to him.
He finished a length second in that Listed, despite also being hampered in his run, prompting his trainer to say that Minzaal showed all his old enthusiasm and galloped right to the line.
Minzaal (Owen Burrows, Jim Crowley): His best form, last year as a two-year-old, was in winning the Gimcrack and third in the Middle Park, both on good ground. The second in the Middle Park ran third in the Guineas.
Art Power (Tim Easterby, Silvestre De Sousa): Ascot on the soft brings out the best in him; form figures 143; the last two both in Group 1: fourth in this last year and third in the Diamond Jubilee in June.
Glen Shiel (Archie Watson, Hollie Doyle): Last year’s winner was second in the Diamond Jubilee and ran another good race on Ascot soft, beaten two lengths on the last day (by Vadream), but – at age seven now – generally lacks the old sparkle.
Dragon Symbol (Archie Watson, Oisin Murphy): Four wins in a row until racing in the pattern; since then a bridesmaid in all conditions (form 222234) but best at 6f, second successively to Rohaan, Campanelle and Starman.
Rohaan (David Evans, Ryan Moore): Beat Dragon Symbol a nose at Haydock in between winning the Commonwealth Cup Trial and the Wokingham, both at Ascot. Out of form in three races since, and has to bounce back.
Kinross, Creative Force, Happy Power were the 1-2-3 in the 7f Lennox Stakes at Haydock (Group 2, July, soft), just half a length covering them, and all are capable of bringing stamina into play, if the pace is good and the ground is soft.
COAST WIN WOULD BE IRONIC
⭕ 3.23 Wetherby (Bobby Renton Handicap Chase): Long before Ian Renton became boss at Cheltenham, and now a Mr Big of the Jockey Club, I mentioned in passing the family mistake in letting go of Red Rum; I mean, before he won three Nationals. I could tell from our conversation that it clearly still rankles (quick on the uptake, that Daqman).
If ever I need to get into his good books again, I will have to crawl back and remind him instead that uncle Bobby won the National a quarter of a century earlier with Freebooter.
Now here’s Donald McCain, son of Red Rum’s winning trainer, the Ginger man himself, with a runner in the Bobby Renton commemorative race. Irony dictates that he’ll win it with Gaelik Coast.
That is highly likely if he can match his novice-chase defeat of the favourite, Getaway Trump, at Musselburgh in February before that one stepped up and won a class-2 at Doncaster in March.
McCain has scored 6-13 in October, and Brian Hughes has ridden 66 winners already this year after successive super-consistent seasonal tallies of 144, 142, 146, 142, 142.
Gaelik Coast has had a 134-day break but won first time last October, returning from 264 days off.
Whoshotthesheriff usually needs a run back, and his trainer, Philip Kirby, is currently 0-16, with only four of those losers managing to get a place.
Road Warrior must overcome a 176-day absence and the handicapper’s 22lb swipe at his low-grade Spring treble in the North.

RHYME HAS A REASON FOR THIS
⭕ 4.15 Bath: Shane Foley comes over to ride Jessica Harrington’s Sacred Rhyme in this fillies’ and mares’ Listed, and she could be the third Irish winner of the race in four years, as time runs out to get some black type for the season.
She’s not bred for this but her recent form suggests that the 1m 6f is what she needs to complete her black-type mission.
Vindolanda is another ’hidden horse’ in that her backend appearances have been all 12 furlongs but, when her form over a period of a dozen races is reduced to 1m 6f on turf, the returns are: 14311.
Urban Artist has been hiked up the handicap for a hat-trick over 1m 4f but so far her 1m 6f form has been near misses, though she’s down in class here and a danger to all.

ON THE PATH TO MURPHY TITLE
⭕ 4.25 Nottingham: Oisin Murphy has six booked rides at Nottingham, while William Buick has all eight races lined up, with Murphy going into the day just four winners in front after a 96-1 Buick treble yesterday.
They clash at Nottingham (4.25), with all Murphy’s skills required successfully to turn Natural Path’s hand to 5f sprinting.
Natural Path won over 7f and 1m on the soft when trained in France but has been progressive over 6f, recording form figures of 211 in three starts since new trainer Michael Bell sounded him out for the first time at Doncaster in early August.
He has to give 9lb to William Buick on CD-winner Raasel, and I think he can do it.
Raasel’s success has come in lower grade and his Nottingham strike last month was over Not On Your Nellie, whose form before and after that race was 10th of 13 in class 5 and last of 19 in class 3.
