PREVIEW

Weather permitting, the second round of Wimbledon continues today as Robin Soderling and Leyton Hewitt meet for the fourth time in their careers. The tenacious Aussie leads 3-1 in the head-to-head stats, although Soderling won their last encounter after fighting back from a set down.

Soderling came through 3-1 against Philipp Petzschner following a slow start in his first match, but as the match progressed the tall Swede looked more comfortable on the grass. Hewitt beat Kei Nishikori by the same margin, so all is set for a decent match.

The Aussie has not had much game time since recovering from his latest injury and his three hours and seven minute victory in the opening round might well have taken a lot out of him. He faces a tough ask against an opponent of Soderling’s strength and breaking his serve is very tricky to do.

After a number of years of struggling at SW19, Soderling looks to have adapted his game to suit the grass surface. He reached the quarter-finals last year, where he was beaten in four sets by the eventual champion, Rafa Nadal.

It would be foolish to think that Hewitt will give anything but his all today, but he will likely find the going tough against the brute force of his opponent. Both players opening round matches needed four sets and I can see Soderling going through by the same margin.
