PURPLE PATCH: We analyse The Reds’ record in the English League Cup Final ahead of this Sunday’s showpiece against Chelsea.
This season’s first piece of silverware is up for grabs on Sunday with Liverpool and Chelsea going head-to-head in the English League Cup Final.
Liverpool have won a record eight League Cups and have reached a further four finals, meaning their EFL Cup final win rate stands at an impressive 67 per cent.
In those 12 finals the Reds have scored 19 times, a rate of 1.6 goals a game, while they have conceded 13 times.
Liverpool are also no stranger to a penalty shoot-out in the final having contested 3 and won 2 of those, in 2001 and 2012.
The latter marked the last time Liverpool lifted the League Cup, after defeating Cardiff City on penalties. However, they were out of luck from the spot in 2016, when losing out to Manchester City.
That victory for City marked the beginning of a remarkable run, which saw them lift the trophy five years in a row, drawing level with Liverpool on eight EFL Cup wins.
On Sunday, the Reds have a chance to eclipse the Manchester side and register their ninth success.
Jurgen Klopp will be hoping that Sadio Mane, fresh from guiding Senegal to African Nations Cup glory, once again comes to the fore against Chelsea, with the striker having found the net eight times in the 19 games he has faced the London club.
