IPL: Our cricket tipster The Edge previews Monday’s IPL game between Punjab Kings v Chennai Super Kings with a recommended BETDAQ bet.
MATCH OVERVIEW:
It’s Kings v Kings as we start a new week at the Indian Premier League! Punjab Kings take on Chennai Super Kings at the Wankhede in what should be another great game for trading on BETDAQ Betting Exchange. When you look at the table, you can see that this is a vital game for both sides. After losing again on Sunday, Mumbai Indians are nailed to the bottom of the table. It’s almost unbelievable that they have lost their eight games – they are the most successful IPL side! It’s easy to see what has gone wrong this season though, they just didn’t get the auction right. That win for CSK over Mumbai was pretty big, and now they have Punjab Kings in their sights.
This game is a chance to get back involved for both sides. They come into this game sitting third and second bottom, and the loser will have a lot of work to do. The winner will go on to have an outside chance of the playoffs – with the Punjab Kings obviously have a better chance given they have won one more game than CSK. I don’t think many cricket fans would have seen the top four coming this season – especially Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals because they finished last and second last in 2021 – and then you have the two new sides as well!
There looks to be a top five forming, but you still wouldn’t rule out Delhi Capitals, KKR and these two sides from getting into the mix again. That’s what makes this game so important, and we should have a lot of drama ahead.
WEATHER AND PITCH WATCH:
The Wankhede is the main ground in Mumbai, and we have a lot more ground data here compared to the other grounds this season. In general the scoring has always been good here, and a par score generally falls between 170 and 180 each season. We have had some big scores here already this season, but you would expect that too – we usually see a couple scores over 200 when we get a heavy dew throughout the season. We also had a game here yesterday – Lucknow Super Giants scores 168/6 and defended it to beat Mumbai Indians by 36. I won’t read too much into that because Mumbai Indians have been so bad this season, but I’d go into this game with the idea that the side batting first should be aiming for 175.
RECOMMENDED BET:
Punjab Kings have played here in one game this season, and collapsed all out to 137. Hopefully for their sake that doesn’t happen again. Punjab Kings, for years now, have had two modes – brilliant and terrible. There is seemingly no in-between – it’s actually incredible how the players change, but they are still boom-or-bust. They busted out in their last game with a collapse against Delhi Capitals, only scoring 115 and losing in 10.3 overs in the chase. But when their batters fire they can be incredible too – the key for CSK will be taking early wickets, and then they will control the game. I believe we’ll have a very close game here, but CSK look the value at 1.94. They have their flaws, but they also look to have the right squad to beat Punjab in these conditions. I can see their bowlers doing well against that Punjab middle order.

IN-RUNNING STRATEGY:
Although I favour CSK to win the game here, I would give a slight edge to the side batting first having watched the last two games here. If batting conditions are good then we’ll have a big score, and that should get the market going in your favour. I’d be keen to support both sides batting first, but if Punjab lost early wickets I would bail – their middle order doesn’t look great. In an ideal world, CSK will bat first and we can look for a trade on them before taking on the Punjab middle order in the second innings. The last four sides to bat first here have won, so keep that in mind while trading in the chase.
