⚠️ HEADS UP: Aidan O’Brien confirmed yesterday that his 2,000 Guineas third, Luxembourg, will not be fit enough to run in the Epsom Derby because of ‘a muscular injury.’
But no sooner did the news break than the same stable’s Stone Age was given a tough test by Ryan Moore at Leopardstown and ran more than five lengths clear at the line to take over as Epsom favourite.
CHANGINGOFTHEGUARD Remained a maiden as a 2yo, not off the mark until Dundalk on April 1, but disposed of odds-on New London in soft ground for the Chester Vase, and the type to raise his game again (Aidan O’Brien; son of Galileo).
DESERT CROWN Likely favourite for Thursday’s Dante trial at York, and backed in for Epsom from 33-1 to 6-1. Son of Nathaniel who made rapid progress (24lb) as a 3yo in Spring and early summer. Desert Crown won his maiden at Nottingham (soft) as a 2yo (Sir Michael Stoute).
EYDON Surprise winner (22-1) of the Feilden Stakes at Newmarket from the Washington Singer winner and Royal Lodge fourth, Masekela, and a big price again (33-1), when kept on – fourth – in the 2,000 Guineas, despite being unsuited by the Rowley Mile (Roger Varian).
PIZ BADILE Game success in the Ballysax (Group 3) at Leopardstown in April from subsequent Listed winner Buckaroo, turning around last year’s juvenile form with Duke Of Sessa (Donnacha O’Brien).
STONE AGE Given a thorough test by Ryan Moore yesterday, the son of Galileo, who had prepped convincingly – nine lengths winner – at Navan, simply pulverised the Leopardstown Derby Trial field by more than five lengths, making virtually all.
The trial’s last Epsom Derby winner was High Chapparal in 2002; Dylan Thomas went on to win the Irish Derby in 2006 (Aidan O’Brien).
UNITED NATIONS Behind Coroebus as a 2yo, and beaten on reappearance by Nahanni in the Epsom Blue Riband Trial before getting the better of Nahanni’s Charlie Appleby stablemate, Walk of Stars, in a prolonged gallop to the line in the Lingfield Derby Trial (Aidan O’Brien; son of Galileo).
El Bodegon Beat Stone Age on very soft; 2yo Criterium De Saint-Cloud.
Magisterial Frankel colt, dual winner at a low level. Should improve.
Point Lonsdale Runner-up National Stakes; disappointed in the Guineas.
Star Of India won the Dee Stakes at Chester from the Feilden fifth.
Walk Of Stars won seasonal debut from Listed third, then Epsom second.

I SMELL A WINNER
⭕ 2.00 Catterick Three weekend winners for Charlie and Mark Johnston and the Middleham duo can make it an extended weekend today with Fragrance here.
The two-year-old filly should find life a little easier against her own sex and build on two excellent runs at Newmarket on debut and last time out at Ascot.
Both those efforts are surely head and shoulders above what should be needed to land this and she looks worthy of Supernap material. In fact, I’m surprised she’s not shorter on BETDAQ BETTING EXCHANGE .
She already holds Candy Rain on Newmarket form – although that one is entitled to improve on just her second start but even so needs to find nearly four lengths with the selection.
Alice Haynes has done well with her juveniles but Lady Hollywood would need to be well above average to land this and the early market isn’t especially positive.
Amy Murphy’s Havana Angel has been nibbled at after her decent effort at Ripon last time out where she still looked green on her second racecourse start.
COURTSIDE SET TO LAND ANOTHER ACE
⭕ 5.13 Wolverhampton We know a lot about Courtside given he has run 27 times but he might be just worth following again to follow up on his recent narrow Lingfield win where he and favourite English Spirit pulled nicely clear.
That came on his first start for Sean Curran and the change of scenery might just have freshened him up a bit to the extent that the 2lb hike might be manageable.
IT MUST BE LOVE
⭕ 8.10 Windsor The day starts as it ends for me with Charlie and Mark Johnstone – just further down the A1.
The Windsor card is dominated by a couple of short priced favourites which look solid but priced correctly. Modern News should land the Listed event at 6.40 and follow up his Spring Cup win at Newbury whilst Sir Michael Stoute’s Crystal Delight can progress from a promising debut at Leicester where he was weak in the market but finished an eye-catching third.
The Johnston’s saddle World Without Love in the finale who has finished fourth in each of his first three races and starts life in handicap company off a workable mark of 73.
If the same front running tactics are deployed as used at Wetherby last time out he could prove hard to peg back on a course where the pace can often hold out.
