PAT HEALY: This week Pat reflects on what we learned from the Curragh last weekend where he was particularly impressed by Homeless Songs.
The Curragh
It was a fantastic two days at the Curragh last weekend, and I was delighted to see Native Trail win for my good friend ‘Stormin’ Norman Williamson who breezed and sold the horse to Godolphin. He was mightily impressive in the 2000 Guineas and is obviously an above average three-year-old with a bright future ahead. It was some achievement too for Charlie Appleby to win the three 2000 Guineas (English, Irish, and French) with three different horses, but he really is proving himself to be a fantastic trainer so it’s all well deserved.
Then on Sunday, I don’t know what to say about Homeless Songs, she just has the WOW factor doesn’t she? To see Chris Hayes sitting on top of her and then just drop his hands and watch her stride up to the winning line it was an incredible performance, and she could be something out of the ordinary. It’s fantastic for Dermot [Weld] to find a filly that could be as good as Tarnawa was last season and so soon after she retired. I just can’t wait to see her going forward. DK’s yard went nearly 70 runners without a winner so there must have been concerns at home, but for her to give that performance and bring up his 20th Irish Classic, with his family in attendance, it must have been a special moment. The Tattersalls Gold Cup lived up to its billing and was another fantastic contest. Tom Marquand made his first ride at the Curragh a winning one getting Alenquer up on the line by a neck ahead of High Definition in a brilliant finish.Munster GAA Final
To step away from horse racing for a moment, it’s the Munster GAA final this weekend where Kerry are facing Limerick. I’ll be keeping an eye and wishing Kerry all the best. It’s eight years since we won an all-Ireland final so we’re going through a bit of a famine here in Kerry, and fingers crossed this will be the steppingstone for winning the Sam Maguire in July.
Happy Birthday
It was my good friend Mark ‘Fish’ Enright’s birthday this week, so I’d like to wish him many happy returns. A great day was had on the boat on Killaloe Lake with 15 jockeys singing and celebrating the Fish’s 30th birthday.
