DAQMAN IS 7-1 CAPTAIN OF VALUE: Price-wise Daqman landed his second jackpot of the week when, after Mayson (WON 4-1) in the Abernant Stakes at Newmarket, he named Captain Bertie (WON 7-1) for yesterday’s Newbury Spring Cup.
1,000 GUINEAS ABC: Here’s Daqman’s guide to the leading fancies for the 1,000 Guineas, using this key to the stats:
A Already first or second at Newmarket (10 of the last 12 winners)
B Won a top 2yo race (7 out of 12)
C Had between three and eight races (10 out of 12)
No magic at Newbury. Yesterday’s Fred Darling Stakes, run on the soft at Newbury, was no help in the hunt for Classic winners: Moonstone Magic will not be supplemented for the 1,000 Guineas, with the market leaders assessed like this:
ABC Lyric Of Light: By US sire Street Cry, best known for super racemare Zenyatta, who scored 19 wins in a row in the three years from November, 2007, all bar one over 9f.
Winner of the Fillies’ Mile at Newmarket as a juvenile, altogether unbeaten in three races from firm to good to soft. Goes straight to the Guineas.
ABC Wading: By Montjeu, sire of Derby winners Authorized, Hurricane Run, Motivator and Pour Moi. First foal; dam half-sister to Galileo and related to Sea The Stars.
Won the Rockfel Stakes at Newmarket as a two-year-old, as did Finsceal Beo, Speciosa and Lahan on the way to winning the Guineas during this century to date. Goes straight to Newmarket.
AB Discourse: By US sire Street Cry, best known for super racemare Zenyatta, who scored 19 wins in a row in the three years from November, 2007, all bar one over 9f.
Discourse finished clear of sprinter Lily’s Angel in the Sweet Solera (7f) at Newmarket in August and goes straight to the Guineas after a ‘good blow’ over 7f of the Rowley Mile last Wednesday.
A Diala: Newmarket winner of her maiden over 7f last season and, though she swerved the top two-year-old trials, got within threeparts of a length of Lyric Of Light first time out.
Entered in both the English and Irish 1,000 Guineas and unlikely to get further. Trainer has won the Derby (Shaamit) and Oaks (Dancing Rain) with horses that had won only their maidens.
BC Maybe: By Galileo, dam related to Oaks and Derby winners. Unbeaten in five starts as a two-year-old, winner of the Chesham at Royal Ascot and the Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh.
Unlike Ballydoyle’s last winner of this, Virginia Waters, Maybe goes straight to Newmarket. Virginia Waters had won the Leopardstown 1,000 Guineas Trial, which this year went to Maybe’s stablemate, Homecoming Queen.
There is more collateral form in that Homecoming Queen beat Fire Lily by a quarter of a length that day; Fire Lily had run Maybe to a length and threequarters in the Moyglare last August.
BC La Collina: Out of a Galileo mare, and easily the best daughter of Strategic Prince (high-class two-year-old) so far.
Beat the colts in the Phoenix Stakes but either side of that was dismissed twice by Maybe, including when third in the Moyglare last time we saw her.
BC Elusive Kate: Daughter of Elusive Quality, sire of Kentucky Derby and Preakness winners and of Raven’s Pass, 2,000 Guineas fourth who developed late in his second season to win the Queen Elizabeth 11 Stakes and the Breeders’ Cup Classic.
‘Kate’ completed a hat-trick by beating Fire Lily in last year’s Marcel Boussac and earlier defeated Mashoora at Deauville.
C Mashoora By Barathea, soft-ground sire of sprinter Tante Rose and Derby third, Tobougg. Sister to Lowther Stakes winner, Silk Blossom, who didn’t train on at three.
Opened her account in the Prix Imprudence (good to soft) last month, the race which Natagora won before taking this Guineas.
