HAIL ‘SHOWER’ IN THE NAVAN MUD! Shamrock finds an appropriate winner of the opener at rain-soaked Navan today, taking 8.2 on BETDAQ about the daughter of Red Clubs. He swerves all the favourites in the conditions, barring Athens, his good thing (nap) of the day.
1.55 Navan: I can’t take the short offers about Watsdachances, untried on the soft, though she looked very promising at Cork. And the Bolger Teofilo, Teoirim, is half-sister to a modest sort.
Raceform describe another Cork debut, that of Hail Shower (8.2 on BETDAQ as I write) as ‘very eye-catching’ with the Red Clubs filly ‘not knocked about’, keeping on from the back of the field.
3.25 Navan (Salsabil Stakes): On the back of Ballydoyle’s success with Imperial Monarch in the Sandown Classic Trial yesterday, Kissed has seemingly been backed off the boards.
So it is that Cleofila, yet another of Jim Bolger’s Teofilos, is 3.7 and backable. I’ll probably get done but, in this mud, I’d rather take 11-4 in a two-horse race.
5.05 Navan: I’m ‘expecting’ Ballydoyle to clinch this one. I’d prefer to buy money with Athens as my nap, than search for better offers elsewhere and get turned over by the bad ground.
5.35 Navan: A trappy finale to the card. Though of course hurdles form suggests otherwise, Unaccompanied – a winner on the Flat only up to 10f – might be struggling to get this 1m 5f.
I say that because this run will be at a different speed to her 2m NH wins and her Irish Champion Hurdle flop was her only run since December and she ‘made some awful noises’ during the race, quote unquote one review of her running.
She did win a Listed at The Curragh last Spring but that was shortly after her impressive second in the Triumph Hurdle at Cheltenham. She might well win today but I can’t take odds on until we know for sure there’s nothing seriously wrong.
Robin Hood doesn’t seem to be fancied so, with eight runners, it might be worth an old punt win and place Goldplated, to spring a surprise. As a daughter of Selkirk, she ought to love the ground.
