ANOTHER PEARL FOR FRANKEL

⭕ 2.25 Newmarket The first Group race of the meeting has been farmed by Team Gosden with four winners in the decade, including a 12-1 shot.

Queen Of The Skies looks unexposed and uninviting but is related on the dam’s side to some quality fillies at today’s trip. This is only her fourth race and her first stepped up to the 12 furlongs, with a hood fitted first time.

Sea Silk Road, runner-up in the Ribblesdale for William Haggas, has been favourite three races in a row but won only once, and a first-time tongue-tie suggests she hasn’t been seeing her races out.

The Frankel filly Eternal Pearl has quickly established herself, stepping up from class-5 novice to Group-3 winner, going clear at Deauville, and I believe she has shown the greater improvement since Sea Silk Road beat her narrowly in the Oaks trial at Goodwood (soft) in May.

William Haggas knows all about Royal Scandal through his runner-up in her novice success the last day, and she has to find 20lb.

Poptronic is a freegoing sort and I prefer Eternal Pearl from Sea Silk Road, with Queen of The Skies the outsider.

BETDAQ value 2.97 Eternal Pearl

BIRD CAN REDEEM HIMSELF

⭕ 2.40 Haydock As with Sea Silk Road at Newmarket, William Haggas is throwing extra aids at Post Impressionist, and claiming off him.

The gelding would be odds-on if this race were being run after his second in the Spring to St Leger winner, Eldar Eldarov. But Eldar Eldarov has improved 31lb since then and Post Impressionist has been downgraded 3lb after three defeats in a row, two as market leader.

Today’s last-chance saloon is all about a big step up in trip, first-time cheekpieces instead of first-time tongue-tie which failed the last day, and the 5lb claim of Adam Farragher.

Red flags, too, about the morning favourite, Speycaster, who has won only his maiden, always a bad sign.

Gelding and a step up in trip didn’t inspire confidence (he started 9-1), and didn’t produce a result, here at Haydock in July. So another holiday and the application of blinkers for this return on better ground.

I’ll take a chance with Baltic Bird. Connections were so pleased with his victory in the Spring that they ran him in the Queens Vase (jarred up on the firm ground), which suggests that he is a Group horse in a class-3 handicap today.

Betdaq Betting Exchange 8.4 Baltic Bird

DANCE TO THE TUNE OF 10.0

⭕ 3.00 Newmarket (Rockfel Stakes) First of a feast of two-year-old tests this weekend, this one a Group-2 of 7f, which threw up, as last-year’s runner-up, the future 1,000 Guineas winner, Cachet.

But in Thursday’s column I warned that following the winners of the Rockfel could seriously waste your wallet: the last six to score have run 28 losing races since their victory. No winners; not a one.

Something may remain a ‘hidden horse’ after this afternoon’s test, like Cachet, but on the day we’re looking for one with not a lot of scope which they want to win with now, no great expectations for the future.

I have already suggested Eximious for two reasons: firstly her breeding is no great shakes (sorry, Highclere; I hope I’m proved wrong); secondly, Roger Varian needs to keep her going on top of the ground; she is unlikely to act on the softer autumn surfaces.

Dance In The Grass also needs sound surface; the dual winner was favourite for the May Hill but did not act on the soft.

Sydney Arms Chelsea is another being used up now and the Albany fifth bagged a Group 3 at Deauville the last day, though the form has been let down since by the third, Ipanema Princess.

Olivia Maralda is having her sixth race but finished close up to Meditate at the Curragh. Lakota Sioux seems to have ‘gone over’ already; third in the Chesham but last in the Moyglare.

Commissioning (Kingman out of a sister to Capri) was hooded for her debut success. This second race will tell whether she has the temperament at this stage; the morning market said not, as she eased in the face of support for Olivia Maralda.

BETDAQ value 3.65 Olivia Maralda, 10 Dance In The Grass, 20 Eximious

POT THIS FOR BETDAQ VALUE!

⭕ 3.35 Newmarket (Joel Stakes) The patience and TLC which Sir Michael Stoute affords his fillies paid off yet again when Potapova won the Group-3 Atalanta at Sandown.

Sir Michael will be very keen for her to back up here in a Group 2, after she was never traveling at that level at the Curragh in July, clearly not herself, drifting to 12-1.

Her Sandown second, Grande Dame, had beaten Oscula in her previous race over the same CD, and the third won her own Group 3 at Chantilly a month later.

Sir Michael won this in 2018 with the 112-rated Mustashry, a winner twice in Group 2 after being beaten in a Group 3. Potopova currently rates 110.

The question is whether Tempus (117) can hold his form a fourth time at the age of six. Runners-up in his hat-trick were only Listed or handicap winners at the time, and this is his first try at a Group 2.

Mutasaabeq’s three consecutive defeats as favourite are hardly likely to be redeemed by first–time blinkers; he’s only ever won over 7f.

BETDAQ value 6.3 Potapova

What are points? Points facilitate a staking plan, which is the secret to creating profit. One point is whatever you choose: a pound, a euro, or whatever ….

Start with a bank and decide how much you can afford to lose over a period of time, and determine the size of your bets accordingly. Daqman makes this variation every day.
