It’s FA Cup final weekend and Liverpool after all their struggles this season have a chance to land a cup double. Chelsea have also had a tough domestic campaign, yet they could also finish with two trophies – with a Champions League final on the horizon.
The two finalists reached this stage in very contrasting styles, with Liverpool edging out their bitter rivals 2-1 and Chelsea hitting Tottenham for five on the Sunday.
Fulham were the latest side to return from Anfield with all three points and the supporters will probably be glad to be playing outside of Merseyside. The Reds have enjoyed a fantastic run in both cups and have beaten some top sides en route to their second Wembley final.
Liverpool have also had the beating of Chelsea over the past couple of seasons and they’ll fancy their chances of a third victory over the Blues since August. They have won five on the spin against Chelsea and four of those have been without conceding a goal.
Roberto Di Matteo continues to make a convincing case for being appointed full-time Chelsea manager. He can do no wrong at the minute and even Fernando Torres is back amongst the goals. The Spaniard got the equaliser at the Nou Camp and he followed that up with a very well-taken hat-trick against QPR.
However, the Blues know deep down that a top four finish and the Champions League are the main goal. With that in mind and the magic that Kenny Dalglish seems to have in the cups, backing Liverpool to win in 90 minutes is the way to go.
Back in the Premier League, Manchester City have a huge game at St James’ Park to negotiate. City fully deserved to beat the champions on Monday night and it remains to be seen how much it took out of the players. The finish line is within touching distance and after all their hard work, I cannot see them slipping up now.
Newcastle have been a breath of fresh air this year and they won’t go down without a fight, especially in front of a passionate Geordie crowd. City are so strong at the back that they should be able to nick this one at the other end to all but bring in their first title for 44 years.
Manchester United play second on Sunday afternoon and it looks like a straight forward home win. I’m really looking forward to this one as Swansea play such attacking football that we should have an open game. United are currently eight goals worse off than City, so expect them to show no mercy.
With that I’m happy to give Swansea a two goal start and still back Sir Alex Ferguson’s side to take all three points.
