THE EDGE: Our cricket tipster The Edge previews Saturday’s 1st T20 between SOUTH AFRICA v WEST INDIES with a recommended BETDAQ bet.
MATCH OVERVIEW:
We kick off the South Africa v West Indies T20 series on Saturday on BETDAQ Betting Exchange after the sides drew 1-1 in the ODI series. South Africa and West Indies players will feature heavily at the upcoming IPL so this should be good practice. So far, we’ve had explosive batting in the ODI series – West Indies racked up 335/8 in the 2nd ODI and then South Africa chased down 260 within 30 overs in the 3rd ODI. Both sides haven’t been at their best in the ODI Super League though, and they are in danger of missing out on the World Cup.
ODI cricket will quickly be forgotten here however, and you’d have to expect very attacking tactics from both sides. Speaking of the IPL above, South Africa have actually held back their players for the Netherlands series because they need to win both those games in the race for the ODI World Cup. Aiden Markram has been made South Africa captain, and while the media was trying to cause a fuss about David Miller not getting the role, I believe Miller is a better players without the stress of being captain. He allows him to be free, and an attacking player like him needs that.
The South African bowling attack is absolutely fantastic, and how this game goes will depend on how West Indies cope with the bowlers. On paper, the West Indies squad isn’t as strong as it once was. Of course, we always tend to have issues with the West Indies board, and most of their star players opt for T20 franchise contracts around the world. That’s going to be an ongoing problem, and their batting does look a little light here.
WEATHER AND PITCH WATCH:
We have the first two T20’s at Centurion which is a fantastic place to play cricket. Obviously we have had the break of International cricket with Covid19, so we’ve only had three International games here since 2020. The first inning scores from those games were 222/6 (chased), 203/5 (chased) and 144 all out (chased). I would go into this game expecting good batting conditions, and we usually see plenty of sixes at this ground given the location. Of course, it’s always good to keep an open mind because we don’t have a lot of recent International cricket.
RECOMMENDED BET:
You never quite know what type of performance we’re going to get from West Indies. On their day, they can be brilliant but more times than not they are disappointing. South Africa absolutely battered their bowlers in the 3rd ODI, and in (expected) good batting conditions I feel we can see the same outcome here. The South African bowlers look a lot stronger on paper too, and it’s not surprise to see them trading 1.38. There’s still some value in those odds, and the home side are worth a small bet.

IN-RUNNING STRATEGY:
As I said above, I would want to confirm the batting conditions but I feel we can expect pretty good batting conditions here. With that in mind, I would focus on looking for trades on the batting side in both innings. There has seemed to be a chasing bias here recently, with scores of 200+ chased down so there could be some value supporting the chasing side even if the market feels it’s a “good score” batting first. I wouldn’t be surprised to see South Africa chasing down 200 for example, and that could prove to be a cracking second innings trade.
