O’BRIEN SUCCESS IS CONTINUOUS

⭕ 3.05 Chantilly (Prix du Jockey Club) French Derby 1m 2.5f good to soft

FORTUNE COOKIE Continuous, just behind yesterday’s Epsom Derby third, White Birch, when they met in the Dante trial at York, can complete a two-day Derby double for Aidan O’Brien, who is striking at a phenomenal 41%.

The firm ground at York didn’t suit the Thomas Bryon winner in very-soft ground at Saint-Cloud in September and it was only his third ever race.

The home defence is usually led by Jean-Claude Rouget: four Derby strikes in seven seasons and with 118 winners this year. Best of a trio of runners today may be unbeaten Ace Impact, a grandson of Frankel.

But the Ace has so far turned up to win only at Listed level, whereas Big Rock and American Flag have scored in Group 3.

American Flag, who took the Fontainebleau trial at Longchamp in April, succumbed to the runner-up, Marhaba Ya Sanafi, when they met again on very soft ground for the French 2,000 Guineas.

Big Rock represents top young training star, Christopher Head, who has been striking at 30% since the start of the season from his Chantilly base.

Son of the legendary Freddy Head, Christopher’s aunt, Criquette, trained Arc winners and Christophe already has the star of the season in France so far.

Blue Rose Cen in the French 1,000 Guineas was his breakthrough Classic success, taking her fourth race in a row at Longchamp.

Big Rock is 3-3 at Chantilly and won the La Force Derby trial at Longchamp in among them, so is a formidable foe for Continuous.

Feed The Fame (Pascal Bary) has raced only twice and won both. Bary has won this Derby six times, and made a supplementary entry for his new Flame but he has a small yard these days for just 19 winners in 2023.

Frankie Dettori rides Epictetus, runner-up to Auguste Rodin in the Futurity last October, and on whom he won the Blue Riband Derby Trial for Team Gosden

But he was well beaten in the Dante, fifth, and cheekpieces must make a big difference today.

KEANE-GOING ZARINSK THE NAP

⭕ 3.50 Chantilly (Prix de Sandringham, 1m Group-2, 3yo fillies) Colin Keane, third in the Epsom Derby on White Birch, is at Chantilly today for one ride, Ger Lyons’ Zarinsk.

Zarinsk (BETDAQ 2.75 this morning) beat subsequent Irish 1,000 Guineas fourth, Tarawa, in a make-or-break front-run for her Leopardstown trial, relishing the ride.

Sauterne was also keen in the French 1,000 but managed to finish third, within three lengths of the brilliant Blue Rose Cen, with Kelina fourth (not much room).

⭕ 4.25 Chantilly (Prix de Royaumont, Group-3, 3yo fillies, 1m 4f) Boogie Woogie, beaten three lengths in the Group-1 Saint-Alary, should be more comfortable down a couple of grades, and will be looking for the double on the day for Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore.

But Ralph Beckett’s Trust The Stars is with the right stable to come on for her (Newmarket) Pretty Polly third to Running Lion, whose stalls antics led to her withdrawal from the Oaks on Friday. BETDAQ 5.0.

⭕ 5.00 Chantilly (Pix Marchand d’Or, 3yo Listed, 6f) Perdika has failed to crack some tough nuts (two seconds and a third), like the big improver Azure Blue, since scoring here at Chantilly on very soft ground in March.

Her winning jockey that day, Maxime Guyon, rides Zoom but lines to form suggest having your pound or your euro on Mickael Barzalona on unbeaten Demain.

⭕ 5.35 Chantilly (Prix du Gros-Chene, Group 2, 5f) Gimcrack second Marshman, winner of a Group 3 here at Chantilly in April, was three-lengths fifth behind Azure Blue at York. Believing is the improver.

But the two English raiders must come out of stalls 11 and 12, and last year’s result may hold the key.

Stalls 2 and 1 were the one-two with Berneuil the beaten favourite, giving them weight. At levels today, Christophe Soumillon will be looking for revenge at 13.0 on BETDAQ.
