PREVIEW
With public and pundit expectations the lowest they have been in years on the eve of a major tournament and with a squad decimated by injury, England’s opening 1-1 draw with France was actually a very encouraging start.

Roy Hodgson’s reputation as a conservative manager was given a knock when he started the wildly exciting youngster Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in place of some of the more established names and he showed enough to suggest he will be an asset for England for a long time. However the familiar problem of who can replace Wayne Rooney when he is unavailable came to the fore once more, as apart from the goal and an early James Milner chance, the Three Lions created little up front.

The Swedes were described by their manager as ‘cowards’ after letting slip a 1-0 lead to lose 2-1 to an Andrei Shevchenko-inspired Ukrainian side on Monday. Aside from the enigmatic Zlatan Ibrahimovic Sweden look decidedly limited in talent and the fact Shevchenko scored twice from just 15 seconds of possession in the whole game must ask serious questions of an ageing defence.

England and Sweden have an identical head-to-head record; both boasting just six wins from 21 meetings with nine draws. In recent decades Sweden developed a bit of a standing as a bogey team for the English but that was finally put to bed last year when England triumphed over the Swedes for the first time in 43 years at Wembley.

Nonetheless today’s affair looks set to be a cagey one with both teams’ lack of ambition going forward probably going to limit this fixture to another low-scoring contest between the sides. Five of the last seven competitive fixtures between the two have been draws and that again looks the most likely outcome.
