Spurs host Chelsea in the latest London Derby with more than just London bragging rights on the line. Spurs went into this matchday sitting top of the table, and while we’re all waiting for the time they slip up their performances have been top class and just maybe they can compete for the title. Chelsea, on the other hand, are really struggling. They sit in midtable and the loss at home to Brentford was a hammer blow last weekend after it looked like they were making progress.
Fair to say things are going better in the new job for Ange Postecoglou rather than Mauricio Pochettino! It’s very interesting times at Chelsea – we know they have a very trigger happy owner and board. I would suggest Chelsea are playing decent football of Pochettino but they aren’t converting their chances and they are conceding sloppy goals too. Basically what they did under Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter, in fairness. With an average xG created of 1.55, they are creating enough to win games. The reality is they desperately lack a key striker up front.
Spurs have been the complete opposite. Coming into this matchday their average xG created was 2.02; they are the only side with an average xG created of over 2.0. Manchester City are very close at 1.97, and in reality will go past them at some point soon but for the time being Spurs are playing the best football in the league. They haven’t been as solid at the back as Manchester City and Arsenal, but they were never going to solve all their issues at the back so quickly. They are marginally better than the likes of Liverpool and Brighton at the back – I suppose when you play such an attacking brand of football you’re going to concede chances.
A fascinating game awaits, and Spurs come into the game as the favourites. They are trading 2.18 with Chelsea 3.55 and the draw is 3.85 at the time of writing. It’s been hard to fully get a good read on this Chelsea squad in my opinion; their stats have been good under every manager recently apart from Lampard, but they just aren’t winning games and collecting points they should. It’s all well and good creating a lot, but if the chances aren’t being taken it’s hard to have confidence in them. The one thing I would say is that their away performance level isn’t much different to their home performance level, so going to Spurs won’t be a negative for them.
Spurs are rightly favourites, but it’s hard to argue that they should be a lot shorter than their current price. I think 2.18 is a fair reflection – you’d expect them to get the job done, but they shouldn’t be odds on. They have played the better football too. I’m happy to stay out of the match odds market here and back Both Teams To Score at 1.65. This game screams goals in my opinion, and BTTS is only a few ticks shorter than Over 2.5 goals. Both sides have been creating a lot, play an open game and they also give away sloppy goals. I’d be surprised if we didn’t see action at both ends of the pitch here and the 1.65 is worth a confident bet.
