MATCH OVERVIEW:
Despite sitting bottom of the World Cup table, England come into their clash against the Netherlands on Wednesday under immense pressure. They will start exceptionally short favourites on BETDAQ Betting Exchange, but after the ICC announced qualifying for the Champions Trophy is top seven plus Pakistan England need to win. It’s one thing performing this badly at a global event – especially when you’re the holders – but it’s another thing to completely miss a major tournament altogether!
The task was made a little bit more difficult for England when Bangladesh beat Sri Lanka on Monday. That game was surrounded in controversy as Angelo Mathews became the first International batsman to be Timed Out for Sri Lanka when they were in a very strong position. Bangladesh chased very well in fairness, but now England might need to win both with their net run rate. That should massively improve here though, but you never know given the way England have been playing in this World Cup – they have been dreadful.
England toured Netherlands in 2021 as part of the ODI Super League, which is now gone. England hammered Netherlands three times, never in danger of losing. They seem to be in a terrible place at the moment though so that will give Netherlands some hope. It’s a huge game for the Netherlands too; who would have thought they would be in this position with two wins already and a chance to go to the Champions Trophy.
WEATHER AND PITCH WATCH:
We have two games at Pune this week, and this is the first of them. In Pune, generally you’d want to chase in the IPL but this World Cup hasn’t really followed the IPL patterns – ODI cricket is very difficult in fairness, and it is daytime cricket. Pune in general has been a high scoring venue, but that wasn’t the case in the opening two games here. We’ve had first inning scores of 256/8 and 241 all out (both chased) before South Africa racked up 357/4 here last week. They won by 190 runs as they hammered New Zealand; perhaps we could see a similar score if England bat first, but they are horribly out of form!
RECOMMENDED BET:
England come into the game as massive favourites. They are trading as short as 1.13 at the time of writing. It’s so hard to have confidence in England at the moment, I imagine you would need to be a very brave punter to take the 1.13 here! Netherlands are miles away from the England level in general, but they have upset South Africa and they started even shorter (around 1.06!). This is definitely a game for small stakes, but the Netherlands make appeal at 8.4 or bigger – they have actually played better cricket than England, so we could easily see a closer game than the odds suggest here. England haven’t played well enough to justify these odds.

IN-RUNNING STRATEGY:
We’ve had a range of scores at Pune, and while in general you would expect big scores it’s hard to know what to expect here. Obviously Netherlands don’t play to an elite level, and then the English batting line-up has been in dire form. If I was Netherlands I’d bat first and try something similar to how Afghanistan beat England, but then England completely flopped against Sri Lanka too. Bowling is the Netherlands strong point, so they are worth supporting with the ball here and we might see the most market movement then.
