GOLD is tarnished again. No excuses, said trainer Paul Nicholls yesterday after Bravemansgame, the Cheltenham Gold Cup runner-up, was a beaten odds-on favourite for the second successive time this autumn.
Royale Pagaille, Bravemansgame, Corach Rambler and Protektorat were all in my Fortune Cookies horses-to-follow last season.
And I delayed the opening of the new list for this season to see the outcome of yesterday’s Lancashire Chase. They finished in that order but only Corach Rambler, who found the pace too fast, could possibly now be followed, with the Grand National in mind again.
⭕ 2.30 Punchestown (John Durkan Punchestown Chase) In Wednesday’s Daqman, I warned ‘How Gold Stars Are Fallen,’ how the large majority of recent winners of the Cheltenham title had failed to make their mark again.
This year’s Gold Cup hero, Galopin Des Champs, was beaten immediately afterwards when second, 4-11 favourite in the Punchestown Gold Cup in April, with Bravemansgame in third.
The winner that day, Fastorslow, must, surely then, be favourite today to deal another Punchestown drubbing to the reputation of the Cheltenham title as well as to Galopin’s own.
Not a bit of it! They were betting odds-on Galopin Des Champs (BETDAQ 1.44) this morning and gifting punters 11.0 Fastorslow, who is not only the form horse but also the improver in the race: up 21lb from three chases in the Spring to 168.
If you ignore the horses and bet on price (which is what value hunters do), you have to be on Fastorslow. Win or lose today, any horse in his position at his price must show a profit in the longer term, possibly even in the short term!
The ratings are due for change. Bravemansgame met another improver (Gentlemansgame) when beaten at odds on in the Charlie Hall and, after holding on to 172 for four consecutive races now, must dip to 170, even lower if you compare yesterday with his 14-lengths defeat of Royale Pagaille at levels in the King George.
So the questions should be? Can Galopin des Champs – himself only seven – regain his trajectory and restore the credibility of the 2023 Gold Cup form after its three consecutive defeats?
Can Fastorslow, who turned the form with Galopin around by more than 23 lengths between December and April at Punchestown, continue his improvement?
Can Paul Nicholls, so deservedly credited with a still impressive training record, revitalise Bravemansgame in time for the King George?
BAILEY TO HIT SIX FROM SEVEN
⭕ 1.05 Uttoxeter Autonomous Cloud won his final novice race last season here at Uttoxeter but the track should also suit Broomfield Present, who has had a run back and is Jumps bred in the purple, by Presenting out of an Oscar mare.
His trainer, Kim Bailey, scored with Parc d’Amour at Huntingdon yesterday to take the yard’s recent form to 101111. I took 2.46 Broomfield Present.
JODY TED LOOKS THROWN IN..
⭕ 3.00 Punchestown This Pertemps hurdle usually sets you up with a young hurdler to follow, not for the Pertemps Final but for another staying hurdle before the end of the year.
Last year, Shewearsitwell completed a double by winning the Mares Hurdle at Leopardstown just after Christmas; Sassy Yet Classy (2021) was pipped a neck in the Tara at Navan; Exciting Oscar (2020) was also placed in a big-field hurdle.
But the wallet-filler was Treacysenniscorthy (2019) the first time this was run. He completed a four-timer, two at Punchestown, two at Leopardstown.
Seven-year-olds have won every renewal so far and Jody Ted, second in the big-field novice chase here in April, and a winner first run back, is absolutely thrown in, 19lb lower here over hurdles, if he can cope with this step up to 3m.
Stuzzikini raised his game the last day at Clonmel, and is now up 12lb from his form (figures 3221) since August.
