FORTUNE COOKIES UPDATE
IF you can’t beat ’em.. I was impressed with The Doyen Chief at Market Rasen yesterday and he now joins our horses-to-follow team, Fortune Cookies.
Though impatient at the start at Rasen, previous antics were not in evidence, and he was pretty near faultless in his hurdling for such a big horse on an undulating track.
He’s now won a Point, a bumper and a hurdle race. And watching him yesterday, his size and scope had me already seeing him jump regulation fences. A galloping course will suit him better.
I shall include in the list Choccabloc, the Nicky Henderson horse that beat The Doyen Chief at Ludlow. He’s out of a Kayf Tara mare, so we can expect him to improve further as he covers an e tended distance of ground.
I’m including Stage Star in the list and, as I reported earlier, I want to follow Farren Glory. Expected runners:

⭕ 1.15 Sandown Gary Moore, who won this three years ago with Darebin, aims two at the near-2m handicap chase today.
Harry Cobden is booked for the reappearance of Hudson De Grugy (had wind op) but note that Caoilin Quinn (on Kotmask) has put his claim to good use and won 15 races for the yard.
Hudson De Grugy won a novice chase at Sandown in March and three handicap hurdles there in 2021.

BORDER FACING INSURRECTION
⭕ 1.50 Sandown Every one of these won the last time out but, though all of them raced within five days around a month ago, only Josh The Boss (128) and Deafening Silence (122) have been given official ratings.
Southoftheborder has already won Point, bumper and novice hurdle (at Sandown over 2m) and has quickly stepped up in trip today.
Insurrection won a big-field novice hurdle at Exeter last month, which previously went to the same stable’s Bravemansgame.
Deafening Silence also scored at Exeter. Dan Skelton sees him as a chaser and has even mapped out his first novice-chase at Exeter next year.
Personal Ambition was placed in an Irish Point behind Cantico, whose price quadrupled at the sales afterwards.
FAY’S DAY BROUGHT FORWARD
⭕ 2.25 Sandown Stay Away Fay was a comfortable winner of the Albert Bartlett and was back to his best, but over fences, when taking the ‘Future Stars Silver Bowl’ at Exeter in November.
Runner-up that day, The Changing Man, will try to take advantage of the winner’s 3lb penalty but I wouldn’t bet on it.
Stay Away Fay was expected to wait for Boxing Day but came out of that race so well, he follows the Paul Nicholls axiom, ‘if they are ready to run, run them.’
Giovinco, who scored at Aintree the day after Fay’s Exeter fences win, is five in a row, still standing, the only blot on his record when he made a mistake and unseated at Carlisle the previous month.
NOT SURE MAY BE WELL PLACED
⭕ 3.00 Sandown Not Sure was kept to shorter trips last season but was strong at the finish over 3m on his return at Wetherby. Can he now take a step up in class? He has a nice spot in the handicap and, if he wins, we’ll say he was well placed and a value offer on BETDAQ at 7.6!
Huelgoat is still only six but has been placed in eight out of nine chases, winning five times, with his last-day strike at Wincanton hiking him to near-top weight here.
Midnight Mary has a consistent profile but has passed the post first only the once.
Collectors Item, off the very top of the handicap (12st), is not the biggest horse to be giving weight all round.
My Silver Lining is an honest sort, a young grey mare, not an old one, and still with scope.
Robyndzone is another willing horse but raised a stone this year and this is his first sight of a Grade-1 track, though nearly 10 years old.
Jet Plane has also been kept to the gaffe tracks and he’s up 10lb for success either side of the summer break.
DARK HORSES IN OPEN RACE
⭕ 3.45 Newcastle Recent CD winners Trais Fluors and Hortzadar have never been able to follow up before and Vindobala decided not to step up on winning here in October by refusing to race the last day, the third time he’s done it this year.
Star Shield, a neck second to Hortzader, is a pound better off but the third home, Showmedemoney, is worse off!
The dark horses of the race, both unexposed three-year-olds, are Open Choice (blinkers first time) at BETDAQ 7.6 and Flag Flying (now with hood and tongue tie), suddenly up in trip at 26.0.
