HILLY OBSTACLE FOR JONBON

That was tres bon, Bon! But Jonbon’s Tingle Creek success at Sandown Park yesterday was more clinical than sweet and Edwardstone closed the gap by six-and-a-half lengths on their Schloer chase one-two.

Jonbon now heads for either the Clarence House Chase (Ascot, January) or the Game Spirit (Newbury, February) on the way to the Champion Chase in March.

But trainer Nicky Henderson’s more immediate obstacle is the Hilly Way at Cork this afternoon and the return of Willie Mullins’ El Fabiolo, who beat Jonbon more than five lengths in the Arkle.

The Hilly Way seldom disappoints, with Douvan, Un De Sceaux and Chacun Pour Soi among its winners, capped the last two years by a back-to-back double from Energumene.

That gave us seven winning favourites out of the last eight and nine out of 10 strikes for Willie Mullins in the decade. Here’s how it looks today:

MASKADA TEST FOR FABIOLO

⭕ 2.15 Cork (Hilly Way Chase) El Fabiolo is unbeaten in four starts over fences, including both the Leopardstown Arkle and a fast-run Cheltenham Arkle last Spring when he beat Jonbon five lengths and more.

Even with the penalties, he is 10lb in front of the Gavin Cromwell grey, Vanillier, who sets out on the road to the Grand National at Aintree, in which he finished second last year.

He really needs twice today’s two miles but it’s perfect for Fil Dor, still just five years old but only once out of the frame over 2m and 2m 1f, with figures of 1111222212012.

Delete first runs back for Maskada and he is unbeaten over 2m and 2m 3f, including success in the Grand Annual at Cheltenham.

Maskada has had a run back and gets 17lb from El Fabiolo. So 9.6 on BETDAQ (2.5 to be second) is too big in the light of El Fabiolo’s 227-day absence and with the weights closing down the ratings to just 4lb between them.

Unbeaten in three races, so how about Jungle Boogie? Well, that’s his entire career, with gaps between races, trying the patience of Willie Mullins, who has finally offloaded him to Henry De Bromhead.

Darragh O’Keeffe, who rode Maskada to win for Henry at Cheltenham, keeps the ride, with Rachel Blackmore on the stable newcomer, Jungle Boogie.

MAHONS RIGHT WAY TO BET

⭕ 1.15 Cork Henry De Bromhead won this last year with a Naas maiden winner and has Mahon’s Way here, following on victory in the same maiden.

First prize will bring his earnings to €27,450 towards the £360,000 paid for him after his stroll round a village Point in Tipperary last November.

Search For Glory was aimed high last season but couldn’t break his hurdle maiden until October this year, and again showed a lack of finish when third, back up to Grade 3 the last day.

There’s not much between Solitary Man and What Path, one-two here at Cork a month back, with What Path 4lb trying to claw back two and a half lengths 4lb better off.

⭕ 2.45 Cork Another lightly raced, and the right age to progress, is Secret Rock, who has won after a break and is a Peter Carberry favourite. Good value at 10.5 on Betdaq Betting Exchange this morning.

Local trainer Robert Tyner has McGrath From Clune nicely in, despite his scoring at Thurles the last day.
McGrath From Clune is 5lb better off for a length-and-a-quarter defeat by Skinnider over the Cork CD in the Spring.

What are points? Points facilitate a staking plan, which is the secret to creating profit. One point is whatever you choose: a pound, a euro, or whatever ….

Start with a bank and decide how much you can afford to lose over a period of time, and determine the size of your bets accordingly. Daqman makes this variation every day.
