11-1 AMONG THREE SUNDAY WINNERS: After an unusual Saturday blip in his winning sequence, Daqman bounced back with winners at 11-1 and 9-2 yesterday plus a double of more than 11-1 for a profit of 53.37 on the day.

EL FABIOLO v JONBON ON SATURDAY: Today Daqman previews the Champion Chase ahead of Saturday’s clash in the Clarence House at Ascot of two of the favourites, El Fabiolo and Jonbon.

STATS: Only three winners this century were of a double-figure age, and only three were younger than seven.

Willie Mullins comes to this with El Fabiolo looking for a stable hat-trick after back-to-back wins by Energumene. That horse apart, this has never been Willies’ race.
But El Fabiolo has won seven out of eight since moving from France, including last year’s Arkle double: beating Banbridge 10 lengths in the Leopardstown version and Jonbon more than five lengths in the Cheltenham Arkle three weeks later.
El Fabiolo (pictured below) is the only horse to beat Jonbon over fences, and Jonbon the only horse to beat El Fabiolo over hurdles! They are currently rated 172-170, with the Irish seven-year-old having the edge and one year younger.
The last upset in the Champion Chase was when Put The Kettle On (Henry De Bromhead) gamely outpaced the odds-on Chacun Pour Soi (Willie Mullins) on the run-in, first and third on goodish ground in 2021.
Henry had hammered Willie in a shock result for the 2017 renewal, also on good to soft, when his Special Tiara (11-1) had the long-odds-on Douvan back in seventh.
The De Bromhead contender in March is Captain Guinness, who reappears at the Dublin Festival (February 4). Second to Energumene in last year’s Champion Chase and afterwards less than four lengths behind Jonbon at Sandown but pulled up sick the last day.
The mare Dinoblue (Mullins), also engaged on February 4, is the improver in the field: up 19lb after second in the Grand Annual last year and unbeaten since, she will get 7lb allowance in March.

WEATHER LATEST
⚠️ Punchestown and Hereford both passed their morning inspections which is good news but it may be the calm before the (snow) storm with prospects for the rest of the week looking less promising. Chepstow and Plumpton have both called inspections ahead of their Tuesday cards.
GOLD MEDAL CHANCE
⭕ 1.20 Lingfield No race above a class 5 at Lingfield (it’s the Monday law!) but Goldsmith is arguably masquerading as a much better horse than this level.
The Alice Haynes trained runner is bidding for an all-weather hat-trick after wins at Wolverhampton and at Southwell (class 4) last week and can continue the good recent form of the stable.
He’s racing under the statutory 5lb penalty for his latest success and has a couple of similar in-form rivals to fend off which is helping make the Betdaq Betting Exchange market for me.
Inverlochy came up short when bidding for her own hat-trick at Newcastle – beaten just half a length but has been pushed up another 2lb for that defeat.
A bigger danger may come from Landlordtothestars who is consistent and relatively lightly raced. This is his first trip to Lingfield.
CATCH ME IF YOU CAN
⭕ 3.20 Lingfield Night On Earth is a big class dropper and can finally snap the losing sequence since his Nottingham success of 2022. The Ian Williams trained runner is a previous course and distance winner here and showed signs of a return to form at Wolverhampton last time out when fourth in a class 3.
Now two rungs down the class ladder and off the same handicap mark he will no doubt take some catching – his modus operandi is catch me if you can as he have bundles of early.
Mick’s Spirit has a good record in this race and can chase him home – he was a promising fourth over course and distance last time out but this looks tougher despite the smaller field.
NO BRIDGE TOO FAR
7.30 Wolverhampton I was taken with the run of Jumira Bridge here last week when the ten-year-old saw most of his younger rivals off to finish a good second to He’s An Angel over this trip. Off the same mark he can again be competitive and has less question marks than the others.
Mc’s Wag was heading the Betdaq morning market but is 0-7 now and has had easier chances than this.
Smasher is 0-11 although has run well previously over course and distance.
Lynwood Lad found his revised handicap mark too much when trying to complete a hat-trick over course and distance last time out.
