NO FLIES ON THE GREAT O’GRADY
Supreme again this year! Champion owner J P McManus has seven at the front of the market for the Supreme Novices Hurdle with six different trainers.
Is he with Willie Mullins, trainer of previous winners in the decade: Appreciate it, Klassical Dream, Douvan and Vautour? Yes, he is.
With Nicky Henderson (Constitution Hill, Shishkin and Altior)? Yes, of course. Plus John and Thomas Kiely, Edward O’Grady, Gordon Elliottt and Jonjo O’Neill.
J P hasn’t won the race since Like-A-Butterfly (2002) and Captain Cee Bee (2008), who were scoring for none of the above! They were with Charlie Swan and Eddie Harty.
And he’s also had a frustrating run of six seconds and two thirds in the race with, among them, horses that became stars: Jonbon, Binocular, My Tent Or Yours.
McManus is a long way clear top of the 2023-24 GB Jumps owners’ list, with no one else with even half of his £732k earnings yet dwarfed by his 2022-23 winning total of £2,257k.

But the 75-year-old O’Grady believes that No Flies On Him, a Westerner out of a Zilzal mare, will take him back into the big time.
Derek O’Connor has been responsible for the early education of No Flies, who was picked out by Edward at the sales, ‘a kind offer by J.P,’ but there are no flies on McManus, who knows the O’Grady record for spotting a potential star.

NEW LEGACY AT NEWBURY
⭕ 3.10 Newbury Watch your channels! A new era for Newbury whose pictures will be broadcast by Sky Racing today having left the Racing TV stable.
Between Waters looks likely to start favourite for her fourth successive race.
However she has let supporters down on each occasion – being beaten at 11/8, 13/8 and 6/4. Ouch!
There were a couple of silver medals for her in that sequence which means the handicapper can’t be too kind and her starting mark of 115 looks plenty high enough.
I’m also concerned that Nicky Henderson’s runner hasn’t looked in obvious need of a longer trip based on her two latest efforts at Ludlow. “headed last soon no extra” and “hung left no impression” (both over 2m 5f).
I prefer the ever-reliable Gaye Legacy who gets ticks in most of the boxes and her Kempton class 2 second last time out to Martha Brae really does stand out in a class 4. The handicapper could well have been more punitive than shoving her up 2lb and I’m staking for a WIN 20 return.
… AND ALL THAT RAZZ
⭕ 6.30 Southwell Razzam could be the interesting one here for Michael Appleby against the warm Betdaq Betting Exchange favourite Clipsham La Habana.
Razzam made a winning stable debut at Yarmouth back in August and although hasn’t managed to follow that up has run some solid races in defeat and has fallen back in the weights to his lowest mark since the win.
He ran much better than his finishing position of 5th of 7 at Chelmsford might look at first glance as he only tied up in the closing stages to be beaten just two lengths by Love De Vega. The step back in trip should be a positive for the four-year-old whose Yarmouth win came over an even shorter five furlongs.
Clipsham La Habana looks plenty short enough for me. He hasn’t managed a win since going back to back at Kempton and Newcastle in 2022 and although running reasonably consistently you just get the feel he remains firmly in the grip of the handicapper who has kept him on the same mark as he was when fifth at Lingfield last time out in a similar class 4.
I’m just struggling to see where the improvement is going to come from without the help of the handicapper and the current price makes no appeal.
Ice Cool Harry is interesting in that he remains a dark horse. However, he has been off the track since August, trainer Clive Cox isn’t having many runners and this one has only raced once on the all-weather. With those variables the market probably will be the best guide.
WON, WON, LAST, LAST
⭕ 8.00 Southwell No play for me here but it’s not often you see a horse with a form sequence of WON, WON, last of 11, last of 26. That’s the case with the Roger Varian trained Revenite who is having his first start since Royal Ascot. Where can you even start with this one?
THE LAST RACE KING
⭕ 8.30 Southwell The last of 9 (NINE, as the old teleprinter used to proclaim on any extraordinary football scores) and King Viktor might be worth the wait.
He’s run 14 times in his career but only twice in the last 18 months and looked back to his best when winning over course and distance last time out. A rise of 2lb keeps him very competitive in a race where his rivals look mainly in the grip of the handicapper.
