PREVIEW
David Ferrer and Andy Murray go into today’s quarter-final clash with an identical head-to-head record of five wins apiece. Tellingly, however, Ferrer has only once beaten Murray in a match off his beloved clay and Murray is rightly favourite to reach the semi-finals for the fourth successive year. With number two seed Rafael Nadal out, tennis fans know a Murray win will make him an odds-on chance to be the first British male to reach a Wimbledon final since 1936.

Murray has seen his last two matches interrupted by the weather, whereas Ferrer has enjoyed a pretty stress-free run to the last eight. Murray made Wimbledon history last Saturday when his match against Marcos Baghdatis wasn’t concluded until 11.02pm, the latest ever finish, and then saw his Court One tie against the tricky Marin Cilic broken up repeatedly by the rain.

Ferrer, has already knocked out Murray from one Grand Slam this year and will be confident of ruining home hopes for another year. The Spaniard has only dropped one set this tournament, against the powerful Andy Roddick, and has proved his gritty determination by triumphing in all three tie-breaks he has contested.

He has already joked to the press he expects Murray to win because ‘he is a better player’ but Murray should take nothing for granted against the world number six. That said Murray was mightily impressive in his match with Cilic and with home support roaring him on, will be tough to beat on a surface he relishes much more than Ferrer.
