DARK HORSE AT BETDAQ 22.0

⭕ 1.15 Sandown (5f handicap) A good race but don’t expect a Nunthorpe winner to emerge, as did Live In The Dream last year. DRAW (last 10 years) 4, 3, 1, 2, 4, 5, 4, -, 3, 4.

FAVOURITES: 6 out of 9, including one joint, and the filly Miaharris (stall 8) was a Listed-level two-year-old; Hedge Fund (2) had a good first run back and Sports Coach (7) is from a stable in form.

Richard Fahey has the best recent record of the low-drawn yards in this, and Dark Vintage (gate 4) had winning form as a 2yo for the American master of juvenile speed, Wesley Ward. Bred to do just as well with some cut.

Shagraan (3) was Listed level with Clive Cox but has been gelded and moved to Michael Appleby, who is currently struggling (2-27).

Hedge Fund (2) was giving weight when beaten at Bath and the winner has won a Listed since.

Betdaq Betting Exchange 6.8 Hedge Fund, 22 Dark Vintage

MOORE GIVES HARRY A HAND

⭕ 1.50 Sandown (1m Esher Cup) Charles Hills took this last year and Cogitate (stall 7) has had a reappearance run. The easing of the ground won’t help.

Richard Hannon is another of the usual suspects, previous winner who has also given his Blue Lemons (5) a run. Kept to soft-heavy last year, now requires a 5lb claimer.

Clive Cox (Cracking Gold) is on a modest 1-15, whereas Andrew Balding (Royal Supremacy) has had two winners from his last five runners.

Royal Supremacy’s form is lacking in depth; eight lengths behind Blue Lemons at Newbury but on the up since and handicapped to turn the tables.

The morning money was for Hand Of God, Harry Charlton’s first runner after taking over the Harry-and-Roger-Charlton mantle on Tuesday. Ryan Moore booked with the clear intention of a good start for the new boy. BETDAQ 2.69.

Karl Burke is striking at nearly 25% right now and Cuban Tiger – back on the track too quickly the last day after a win eight days earlier – has had a reasonable break since.

ROYAL WINNER FOR MARQUAND

⭕ 2.25 Sandown (1m 2f Group 3 Sir Gordon Richards Stakes) St Leger third Desert Hero won the King George V at Royal Ascot, his third win in four starts over 1m 4f carrying the royal colours. May have too much class for this field.

Israr has a higher rating for taking the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes at the July Meeting, but is 0-4 since, placed at best, and is now blinkered.

Both hold-up horses, Israr and Desert Hero, have never won at 1m 2f, and the pace horse here is Okeechabee but he has raced just the once in 18 months, officially 5-7lb behind the front two, and a likely target.

Ralph Beckett, currently out of form (0-14), saddles Artistic Star, whose sole success beyond breaking his maiden was over today’s CD. Wins when fresh.

Beaten by Desert Hero (1m 4f) on the soft at Goodwood but doing his best work at the two pole and had led at a similar stage when fourth in the Royal Ascot Derby (King Edward V11 Stakes).

MOORE MEDICINE BY NOSTRUM

⭕ 3.00 Sandown Mile An old warrior aged eight won in 2017, and Lord North cannot be discounted but his Sandown form is 04, though that fourth was in the Eclipse.

Nostrum and Charyn are dead level on 114 in the ratings and in the BETDAQ offers this morning (3.5). Sir Michael Stoute has just had a winner and Nostrum scored on debut and each time after a break.

Charyn, who has improved throughout the winter, went clear in the Doncaster mile and further easing of the ground will suit.

Poker Face has been winning at lower Group level in France on soft ground; so far uncomplicated, yet they dress him up in cheekpieces; perhaps because the stable is out of form (0-11).

DERBY TRIAL NOT INSPIRING

⭕ 3.35 Sandown Classic Trial Last year’s Epsom Derby third and Irish Derby winner, Westover, won this 12 months back for Ralph Beckett. But that was the best result since Old Vic (1989) and Pentire (1995).

Beckett now saddles Macduff, beaten two lengths in the Royal Lodge, and a pound behind Arabian Crown and Portland in the ratings.

That fact hardly inspires confidence in any of them for this reason: the second to Macduff last August was four times favourite but won only his maiden; and the fourth was twice beaten at odds on.

Macduff, Remaadd and Portland were then placed without winning in the same race at Haydock in September; in fact, Portland has managed only places since winning a handicap, and Aiden O’Brien is 0-5 in England this year.

Odds-on Arabian Crown seemed to have that touch of class when five lengths winner of the Group-3 Zetland Stakes at Newmarket in October, but the runner-up was beaten further in the Feilden recently.

He needs to make a big impact today to justify his place in the first four of the Derby market for which City of Troy will be odds on if he wins the Guineas, as expected.
