SPATE OF OUTSIDERS WIN AT YORK: There were winners at 14-1, 16-1, 18-1 (twice) and 28-1 at York yesterday but Daqman, trying to get in on the act, picked Flaccianello (2nd 12-1). ‘I needed a single malt whiskey after that; not a Chianti,’ groaned Daqman. The softer ground which is blamed for a spate of longshots may change again, with further showers at York, and he tries to find more outsiders.

⭕ 1.50 York today (Queen Mother’s Cup, 1m 4f) Rain soaked the formbook on the Knavesmire yesterday, and winners turned up at 14-1, 16-1, 18-1 (twice) and 28-1. Can one of the lady amateurs bag another shocker in their annual cup race?
A single-figure draw has been an essential round this left-turning track in the last nine seasons: 2, 1, 5, 1, 6 over the last five years.
Grey mare Arrange had the disadvantage of stall 17 when fourth here at York recently. She is now better off at the weights with the second and third, Piecederesistance and Toshizou and now has gate 4.
She is steered by last year’s winning rider, the Irish champion Jody Townend, younger sister of Paul Townend, who was just pipped by Jack Kennedy for the jockeys’ title. BETDAQ 8.8. taken.
Lord Melbourne looked a winner waiting to happen at Epsom, first run for Ralph Beckett and the mount of former champion Serena Brotherton.
Current English title-holder, Brodie Hampson, partners the tough and consistent Andaleep (stall 5), who has won at York on good to soft. BETDAQ 16.5.
GOLDEN OUTSIDER AT 58.0
⭕ 2.25 York A single-figure draw is again helpful, with very little time for those drawn wider to manoeuvre to the rail.
Golden Pharaoh (stall 2 but 58.0 offers on BETDAQ this morning), the only three-year-old in this huge field, knows all about soft ground as a newcomer from France.
Richard Fahey has had 14 winners in 14 days, and Stone Soldier (stall 4) has won twice after a break and, as a son of Mayson, has his conditions. This front-runner should give your small stakes another chance of a big return at 33.0.
WIN A TRIP WITH BERMUDA
⭕ 2.40 Sandown (Scurry Stakes 3yo, 5f) Always highly regarded at Kingsclere, the grey Flora Of Bermuda drops two grades from her tilt at the Temple Stakes (Haydock soft), which she threw away by losing many lengths at the start.
‘The little filly,’ Adaay In Devon, finally won her Listed at Bath in April and ran second over an additional furlong in a Group 3 at Ascot (the winner is headed for the Commonwealth Cup next week). She is consistent but hard to win with.
Graceful Thunder and No Half Measures (from the tricky one stall) need plenty of ease in the ground, and Nighteyes has 12lb more to carry for back-to-back successes in the Spring.
A second grey in the race is Symbology, who launched her career by turning over the favourite, the very same Nighteyes, at York in July.
She is still rated 7lb higher than Nighteyes, though that one has raised her mark 12lb in lower class since that York race.
Symbology – third in the Lowther – made a moderate start to her three-year-old career (12th of 14 at Newbury last month) but Clive Cox is confident that she’s moved forward since then.
Another who needs to bounce back is Dawn Charger, bogged down on heavy at Chantilly earlier this month, but winner and second third in successive Group races in the autumn.

5.1 REAL DREAM OF AN OFFER
⭕ 3.00 York (Race To The Ebor Grand Cup) This race has thrown up some good stayers, from Clever Cookie to Quickthorn.
William Haggas has won it twice in seven seasons and Klondike (Ryan Moore booked) was runner-up to Queens Vase winner Gregory, in the Cocked Hat Derby Trial last Spring.
Relentless Voyager ran clear in the Northern Dancer Handicap (good to soft) at Epsom on the first of the month.
But Real Dream, who flopped in last year’s Ebor on firm ground, is long-term planned for this year’s race by Sir Michael Stoute. He is the only distance winner in the race, yet 5.1 on BETDAQ.
Last year’s firm ground at York fell in between Real Dream’s scoring at Ascot on good to soft and running third in the Mallard at Doncaster on soft. Highly regarded (started favourite in five of his nine starts).
A DELIGHT FOR MOORE AT 10.0
⭕ 3.35 York Big-field sprints usually split, with the main body of lower-drawn runners from middle to far rail having an advantage, but that didn’t stop Quinault winning the fifth of his six wins in a row out of 20.
And the year before Harry Three (19), using the near rail to help him, blew out my bull’s-eye punt on 16-1 Lucky Man, who challenged final furlong on the far side. Before that every winner for six years was in the first seven stalls!
From those seven today, James’s Delight (1) has been progressive, and has Ryan Moore booked on ground that’s suitable.
Tropical Island (5) likes plenty of cut and won here last September before losing her chance for some black type, slowly away in a Listed.
But Garfield Shadow (16), who won wide at Chester with a late flourish, is clearly material for a near-side swoop, with the ground providing him with the soft conditions to prove that defeat by the prolific Woodhay Wonder (withdrawn today) on firm at Newmarket wasn’t his running.
