GREATWOOD A ONE-HORSE RACE! Daqman bids for a naps hat-trick today on a Nicky Henderson horse with a big future and he backs up confidence in the yard with a sole selection in the Greatwood Hurdle.

PEAKY TO RUN A BLINDER

⭕ 1.45 Cheltenham I’ve ducked the first-race novice for maidens, but we shouldn’t have any trouble with this novices’ handicap chase, though the performances yesterday of the winners in 2020 (Protektorat) and 2023 (Ginnys Destiny) may have dampened your enthusiasm for the race as a marker.

Lucinda Russell had four in a row earlier in the week and Primaz scored either side of his summer break. He should have no worries with the extra distance.

But Nicky Henderson marked Peaky Boy ‘a horse with a big future over fences,’ after his hat-trick of bumper, maiden hurdle and novice strike here at Cheltenham.

No prizes for guessing the sire of Westerninthepark (went clear at Stratford in his first chase) and Leader In The Park (chasing debut; well behind Peaky Boy over hurdles here).

YOUTH ON MATATA’S SIDE

⭕ 2.20 Cheltenham A class-2 chase in which Calico and Matata were separated by a neck here over the same trip and track in similar conditions at the October meeting. Matata is allowed a pound to get on terms and is the younger horse.

Calico’s trainer, Dan Skelton, will know all about Third Time Lucki, who left him to join Fergal O’Brien after a long absence from the track.

Wind surgery helped Gunsight Ridge score over Aintree’s Mildmay course (2m soft) and he won a similar race, also on soft, at Perth before the summer break and then more wind surgery. But he’s improved only 4lb in his rating over eight races since February, 2022.

HYMAC CAN BAG THE CASH

⭕ 2.55 Cheltenham The 2022 winner, Does He Know, is back for a repeat 2lb lower and can be expected to come on for his fourth, first run back here at the October meeting, following a wind op.

Hymac won over 3m 4f from a big field here at Cheltenham in April (good) but had no problem dropping back a mile and switching to hurdles on heavy on his return 19 days ago.

On the same day in April at Cheltenham, a grade higher but two furlongs shorter, Manothepeople won from out-of-form place horses who had the good ground against them. He still went up 7lb.

Ballygrifincottage seemingly needs cut and Abuffalosoldier would appreciate really soft ground, says the yard.

Watch the market view of Bangers And Cash. The Ben Pauling stable has returns of 131111 when their runners have been favourite or well punted in the last two weeks, so the stable knows exactly what it’s about.

Welsh Grand National winner Nassalam needs heavy ground and Scottish National runner-up, Surrey Quest (stable out of form) has done best with cut.

The mare Rose Of Arcadia failed to score after a break for the first time in three seasons but Joe Tizzard has been in form and Freddie Gingell blew them away with a great ride here yesterday on Il Ridoto in the Autumn Gold Cup.

HENDERSON’S IN CONTROL

⭕ 3.30 Cheltenham (Greatwood Hurdle) We were on East India Dock yesterday, taking James Owen to back up his 2023 Triumph Trial win at Cheltenham with Burdett Road. He surely did.

Now here is Burdett Road, still only four, trying to mix it with more experienced handicappers, Harry Cobden booked. It looks a tough mark, giving away weight to the likes of Dysart Enos, unbeaten under Rules

But Under Control, owned by J P McManus ,was only four when she won the Novices Championship at Sandown in April, 2023, beating Iberico Lord in the same ownership.

Iberico Lord won the Greatwood for J P McManus in his very next race, and I find it hard to look past this Greatwood-double plot being engineered by Nicky Henderson, with a result in the same race as the turnkey form.
