We kick things off on Tuesday night with Barcelona in action away to Mallorca, and it’s going to be a very interesting week at the top of the table with Real Madrid in action on Wednesday. We already had a lot of drama at the weekend; Barcelona had a shock loss at home to Las Palmas and that left them just one point ahead of Real Madrid, but importantly Real Madrid have a game in hand.
After getting a dream start to the season and playing some impressive football, now Hansi Flick is definitely having his first crisis as Barcelona manager. I said at the weekend that you could have called it a min-crisis, a loss at home to Las Palmas is definitely going to ring the alarm bells! Barcelona were trading as short as 1.19 to win at the weekend, and that was one of the shortest prices around Europe. Never mind losing, a draw would have been a shock result! Unfortunately for Barcelona, it was just one of those games because they did finish the game with an xG of over 2.0; they just didn’t take their chances.
Mallorca will fancy their chances given this poor run of results for Barcelona – it wasn’t so long ago that Barcelona were nine points clear at the top of La Liga; obviously Real Madrid had a game in hand but I didn’t expect the gap to close that quickly. It’s not a surprise to see Barcelona come into the game as the odds on favourites, but I’m sure there will be plenty of willing layers! Barcelona are trading 1.69 with Mallorca 6.0 and the draw is 4.1 at the time of writing.
Mallorca have been having a dream season – after winning at the weekend they are sitting in the European spots! Confidence must be very high in the camp, and although they haven’t been that good going forward, they have been rock solid at the back. They are actually marginally conceding more chances than they are creating, but they are just grinding out so many results. Nine of their fifteen games have finished with Under 2.5 goals, and that’s trading 2.09 here which is worth backing in my opinion. Clearly Barcelona aren’t fully firing at the moment, and Mallorca have been focused on being solid at the back this season – I’d have Unders as the favourite.
