CHAMPION CHASE DUEL IS ON
Whatever you can do! Energumene yesterday matched Jonbon’s Saturday feat in a glorious weekend for two-mile chasers.
Despite a lay-off of 593 days, Energumene belied the absence and his years – he’s 11 on January 1 – jumping superbly in the Hilly Way Chase at Cork.
Jonbon remains a short price for Cheltenham but canny punters will want a bit of 6-1 Energumene in case something goes wrong with the Nicky Henderson favourite, as so often happens these days.
Don’t forget that Willie Mullins superstar was twice Champion Chase winner and the 18 months’ absence seems to have rejuvenated him.
Meanwhile, Venetia Williams produced another big improver when Djelo exploited the flaws in Protektorat and Ginnys Destiny in the Peterborough Chase at Huntingdon.
Djelo probably won’t be hurried (he’s only six) after his second in the 2m 1.5f Haldon Gold Cup and then yesterday’s clear victory over 2m 4f.
But did I say improver? He was officially 17lb behind yesterday’s runner-up and beat him six lengths, receiving only 3lb.
Jonbon and Energumene could meet earlier in the Clarence House Chase at Ascot on January 18
MULLINS’ KEMPTON STRIKE
⭕ 12.30 Lingfield Full Confession, already a bumper winner in Ireland, is the first-ever runner for Willie Mullins at Lingfield Park, hard on the heels of winners for the yard in the last two weeks at Tramore, Sedgefield, Fairyhouse, Clonmel, Navan and Cork.
It’s one thing to train racehorses, another to know the differing terrain and form and be able to score at so many tracks, all bar one of 13 winners favourite or 3-1 or less.
Classically bred on the dam’s side, Full Confession will be another short-priced Mullins banker but we’ll use him for leverage in small-stakes Monday-blues multiples.
PEKING AT THE RIGHT TIME
⭕ 1.30 Lingfield Harry Derham (currently 4-6) is also ticking off the winners as if placing them is easy, but Jasmine d’Airy goes head to head here with Ben Pauling’s Diva Luna, a Grade-2 Aintree bumper winner.
Jasmine d’Airy (BETDAQ 12.0) is a Sutton-family horse entrusted to 5lb-claiming amateur Ben, who has ridden three winners this season for Dan Skelton.
⭕ 2.00 Lingfield Nicky Henderson tried Kado De Joie in an Ascot handicap hurdle under Nico De Boinville but it was James Bowen who got him home last month, turning over a short-priced favourite at Fontwell.
But there’s a ‘hidden horse’ here in Peking Opera, one time entry in the Queens Vase, the Adonis Hurdle and the Cumberland Lodge.
Betdaq Betting Exchange 2.89 Kado De Joie, 28 Peking Opera
ALTMORE A WINTER PLAYER
⭕ 5.00 Newcastle Compare Altmore’s three races with all others in this big field (bar Flying Fletcher) in a season which he started late in September.
My supposition is that he intends the serious targeting of the winter AW scene for owner Fiona Carmichael. This is her only horse with William Haggas.
Altmore won back to back in the autumn and returns, well drawn here, after a break, in a race which gives three-year-olds an advantage. BETDAQ 7.5
The grey Secret Guest has aimed higher than his class-4 win here in February, his sole AW success but, though dropped a grade here, is being held on to by the handicapper.
True Promise is also a class-4 winner here and Rohaan only class 6 but that was before he rose to 105 after winning at Ascot, heavily backed last autumn.
He is 0-11 now but ‘watch the market’ is the obvious advice. The only money for him since that strike was when beaten only a length, also at Ascot, in September. Once a year in the autumn, it seems.

What are points? Points facilitate a staking plan, which is the secret to creating profit. One point is whatever you choose: a pound, a euro, or whatever ….
Start with a bank and decide how much you can afford to lose over a period of time, and determine the size of your bets accordingly. Daqman makes this variation every day.
Did you know? DAQMAN’s tips are posted each and every day so he’s always on hand to help with your horse racing betting.
