THE EDGE: The Edge previews Melbourne Renegades v Melbourne Stars with a recommended BETDAQ bet.
Melbourne Renegades v Melbourne Stars
MATCH OVERVIEW:
We have another Melbourne Derby from the Big Bash on BETDAQ Betting Exchange this weekend! Melbourne Renegades and Melbourne Stars clash again; this time at Docklands and the Renegades will be hoping for a change in fortunes! When the sides met the last time, the Renegades were sitting in mid-table and it looked like the Stars might be heading for the Wooden Spoon. Now it looks like both sides could be involved in the Wooden Spoon battle as they both sit in the bottom three with Adelaide Strikers. The Stars have all the momentum with three wins in a row, but obviously losing your first five games is going to leave you on the back foot!
The upturn in results for the Stars has directly come from their key batters scoring some runs. Den Duckett, Marcus Stoinis and Glenn Maxwell can all win games off their bat on their own – and essentially that’s what they’ve done. Maxwell hit 58 off 32 balls to make the difference against Sydney Sixers this week. No mean feat given the Sixers had been sitting at the top of the table until this week. Marcus Stoinis has been very important too, and the Stars can be thankful he’s not leaving for the South Africa T20 until the Big Bash is over.
The Renegades do come into this game off the back of a win; they ended a run of three straight losses with a win against Perth Scorchers. Usually an impressive result, but the Scorchers haven’t been their consistent selves this Big Bash. With home advantage this time, it’ll be interesting to see can the Renegades put enough pressure on their in-form Stars batting to change the result from last week!
WEATHER AND PITCH WATCH:
Docklands is a fantastic place for T20 cricket with the roof closed – we should have an excellent atmosphere. This will be the third game here this season, and so far it has paid to bowl first. The first inning scores have been very close together – 143/8 and 142/9 – both chased. The Renegades made very hard work of chasing in the first game, but Adelaide Strikers won with 17 balls remaining. It’s a no brainer to bowl first here to be honest after seeing the opening two games.
RECOMMENDED BET:
It’s not a surprise to see Melbourne Stars as the favourites here. They beat the Renegades as recently as last weekend and they are riding a good wave of momentum at the moment too. They were marginal favourites last week at 1.94, but they have come in nine ticks this week to 1.85. I still feel that offers a little value given their key batters are in such good form – the best time to support the Stars is when the likes of Stoinis and Maxwell are firing, and that is now. The Renegades have a pretty weak batting line-up, and I’m happy with the 1.85 on another Stars win.

IN-RUNNING STRATEGY:
So far this season it has really paid to be the side who bowls first here – I know the Renegades made very hard work of chasing here in the first game but their batting has been weak – the score was very gettable. I would focus solely on looking for trades on the side who bowls first here in the first innings, and then depending on how the wicket is playing create a plan for the second innings at the break. With the Stars key batters all in form, it’s going to pay to support them – hopefully they are chasing!
