CHELSEA V CRYSTAL PALACE

2pm: It’s the first Super Sunday of the new Premier League season on Betdaq Betting Exchange and we have a cracking day ahead! Obviously Manchester United hosting Arsenal is going to take all the headlines today, but we start with Chelsea hosting Crystal Palace in what should be an interesting game too. Both sides are coming into the new season on a high after Chelsea won the FIFA Club World Cup during the summer and Crystal Palace just won the Community Shield last weekend. As I said in my preview of that game, given where Palace are likely to finish you could quite easily say that they’ve already had their best moment of the season! Still, what a great moment for Palace – again back at Wembley with another trophy in the bag. Chelsea have definitely divided opinion coming into this season – you have the camp who say they are a lock for the Top Four and the other half are saying they have no chance, which is led by Jamie Carragher! I have to say, I’m in the first camp – they are my most confident Outright bet of the season to finish in the Top Four.

We have an interesting market. Chelsea come into the game as the odds on favourites at 1.62 with Crystal Palace 5.8 and the draw is 4.6 at the time of writing. This will be a good test for Chelsea with a view to the Top Four finish; they really should be winning games like this with home advantage. Palace did impress me with their Community Shield performance; however as I said in my preview of that game, their tempo and work ethic was always likely to be much higher than Liverpool who have bigger targets ahead. I feel the 1.62 is a fair price on Chelsea – I’m happy to stay out of the match odds market. I can see quite an open game here, and I’m happy to look at the goals market for some value. Over 2.5 goals is trading 1.7 and Both Teams To Score is six ticks bigger at 1.76. I couldn’t put anyone off either bet to be honest, I am happy to go with the Both Teams To Score option at the marginally bigger price. I can see an end-to-end entertaining game to start the day.

MANCHESTER UNITED V ARSENAL

4.30pm: There was only one fixture this weekend to take the prime time Sunday TV slot and that’s Manchester United hosting Arsenal. There’s no doubt that this fixture will grab on the headlines no matter what matters – you have to say the jury is out with both clubs. Obviously less so with Arsenal given how good they have been for the last few seasons, but they have yet to convert that into trophies and you can feel the media pressure mounting on Arteta. You also get the feeling that if he doesn’t land a trophy this season, you will start to see a narrative of “he’s taken Arsenal as far as he can.” It’s the opposite pressure at Old Trafford for Ruben Amorim – he just needs to win games rather than even think about winning a trophy. United need a good season in the Premier League – they haven’t got European commitments and while they might not be good enough to compete for the Top Four, they need to be hanging around the Europa League spots not sitting close to the bottom of the table. Amorim has seemingly been able to land a few of his targets – now he’s had more time to work with the players, we need to start seeing results now.

You have to say, it’s a fascinating situation for both clubs this season. You could 100% see a scenario where both clubs have different managers next season should things pan out badly. Nevertheless, what a way to start the season – as you would expect, Arsenal come into the game as the favourites at 2.06 with Manchester United 3.85 and the draw is 3.8 at the time of writing. The sides played out a 1-1 draw when they met here last season, but Arsenal were unlucky – they finished the game with an xG over 2.0 and given they actually struggled a little to create good quality chances last season, they bossed that fixture. While I would lean towards Arsenal here, the 2.06 feels a shade short – I feel Amorim will have United very well set up at the back here; possibly playing for a draw to be honest given they need a positive start to the season. I’m happy with a small investment on the draw at 3.8 from a value point of view.
