Only Frank Holle in the 1960s lost his first five Grand Slam finals and Great Britain’s Andy Murray will desperately try to avoid matching Holle’s record later today. The Scotsman has been a beaten Grand Slam finalist four times, including a thrashing in this year’s Australian Open final by tonight’s opponent Novak Djokovic.
Murray’s coach, the great Ivan Llendl, also shares Murray’s record of losing his first four major finals but believes Murray’s brilliant Olympic gold will have given the 25-year-old the belief that he can compete with the game’s elite in the Slams.
And Murray will have to produce a career best to see off a rampant Djokovic who has looked in blistering form at Flushing Meadows so far as he bids to defend his crown and win a sixth Slam. The pair enjoy a fierce rivalry with the Serbian just leading the head-to-head record 8-6.
However, Murray did beat his rival in the Olympic semi-final and has won six of the last ten encounters. In four finals on the ATP tour they have two wins apiece so there really is not much between them.
Many will argue Murray’s record in major finals, where he has picked up just one set, shows he has stage fright on the biggest occasions but his mentality will surely have changed after London 2012. Djokovic has only dropped one set so far, in very windy conditions, and the world number two will start favourite on BETDAQ.
It’s a difficult one to call and neither player appeals for outright victory at the prices but a bet on Over 40.5 games looks attractive with this looking to have the makings of a thriller.
