Dvinsky will equal the modern-day record for Britain’s busiest ever racehorse when he runs at Kempton this evening in the BETDAQ Dvinsky Record-Equalling 217th Run Handicap.
To mark the feat of the 11-year-old’s 217th race in 10 seasons, management at the Sunbury track have renamed the seven-furlong contest in his honour. Dvinsky will join Sharp Hat, who retired in 2007, in the record books when he lines up for the 5.45. He was trading at 8.8 on BETDAQ on Wednesday morning.
BETDAQ marketing director Shane McLaughlin said today: “Dvinksy has shown a remarkable enthusiasm for racing and it’s fantastic that he will equal the record tonight with his 217th start. We are proud to sponsor the occasion and will be even more delighted if he is able to gain career win number 20 in his ‘own’ race!”
The Paul Howling-trained gelding faces 13 rivals and will be ridden for the 26th time by jockey Tom McLaughlin in what will be his 76th appearance at Kempton.
Hampshire-based Howling said: “It’s a good race title, I’m very pleased with that. It’s very kind of them. He’s a horse who has a lot of supporters out there and the racing pundits seem to like him. He’s very rarely out of the frame and if he is he’s usually not beaten far.
“I think he’ll have a chance. He’s got quite a good draw (seven). He’s in good order, as he proved last week. It would be wonderful if he could win. I’m just struggling to find races at Kempton for him now. After this it’s difficult, but maybe they might put another one on for him!
“I haven’t got another race lined up for him at the moment. It’s one stage at a time.
“He still enjoys the game, is running very competitively and was second last week. The handicapper put him up 2lb under both codes (turf and all-weather). He was a good second, probably to a well-handicapped winner in Alnoomaas.
“He is very sound and very enthusiastic. I’ve never had one go on this long. They are usually getting a bit slower by the time they are eight or nine, but he keeps coming back year after year and running good races, albeit at a slightly lower level than he used to run in.
“He’s taking on younger horses and still running competitively against them. He doesn’t get trained very hard. He’s quite a clean-winded horse, we just keep him ticking over and he does it all.”
Dvinsky has won 19 races to date and amassed over £117,000 in win and place prize-money.
