TRIP SUITS CHANGING MAN
⭕ 2.55 Newbury (Autumn Gold Cup) Paul Townend is given singular instructions by Willie Mullins today: win the Fighting Fifth at Newcastle.
So it is that Closutton sends four deputies prospecting for the Newbury gold to try to claw back £142,000-plus of Dan Skelton’s trainers’ table lead.
The day would be worth almost £209,000 if Willie could land the double: Anzadam at Newcastle with any one of the four.
Spanish Harlem (Danny Mullins) is narrowly seen as his best chance of gold over Blizzard Of Oz (J J Stevin), with Golden Miller third O’Moore Park (Sean O Keefe) and A Penny A Hundred (Sean O’Keeffe), only 1-10 chase success and out of the handicap, unlikely options.
Blizzard Of Oz was placed four times before beating a small-field at Wexford from Stayers Hurdle fourth Rocky’s Diamond last month but this step up will suit on breeding.
Fourth in the Sandown Gold Cup and winner of the Kerry National with Danny doing the steering, Spanish Harlem is punished 12lb on this hat-trick mission.
There’s nothing so high in the handicap has won this in the decade, and – though beaten more than six lengths that day – he is a couple of pounds worse off with the winner, Resplendent Grey.
In 7th was Victtorino, pulled up in the Ultima after a bad start but third in today’s race and gave 8lb and a beating to The Changing Man in the Ascot Silver Cup in December.
The Ultima winner at Cheltenham, Myretown is also on a hat-trick but is up 19lb since the Spring and may need the run.
He is 12lb worse off with the runner-up, consistent The Changing Man, who came from the rear in the November Gold Cup at Ascot (3m) to finish less than two lengths off the winner, Henry’s Friend, who was fifth in this gold cup a year ago, 8th in the Ultima.
Similarly, Hyland is a stone better with Katate Dori, who beat him at Kempton in February.
November Gold Cup winner (2m 4f) Panic Attack has already failed four times around today’s trip.
Betdaq Betting Exchange 10 Resplendent Grey, 13 The Changing Man, 21.0 Victtorino. Six reverse forecasts
TWO LIONS IN TITLE BATTLE
⭕ 2.00 Newcastle (Fighting Fifth Hurdle) Anzadam and The New Lion are both unbeaten youngsters against the 2022 winner, Constitution Hill, the only horse to have beaten Lossiemouth, still standing, in 10 races since Cheltenham 2023.
His trainer, Nicky Henderson, is 6-9 in this, but Constitution Hill’s form fell away (literally) in the Spring: FF0.
Victory for Dan Skelton’s stayer, The New Lion, would help settle the trainers’ title for him in advance of the Cheltenham Festival.
Victory for Willie Mullins’ Anzadam, sole ride of the day for Paul Townend, would close down the Skelton lead by £66k.
Betdaq Betting Exchange 3.05 The New Lion, 3.65 Anzadam. Reverse forecast.
YOU CAN UPGRADE INDEMNITY
⭕ 2.15 Newbury (Gerry Feilden Hurdle): Paul Nicholls was expected to put Tutti Quanti over fences and this is a race he’s won only once (in 2011).
Give It To Me Oj is a CD winner but no 4yo has won this with 12st since 1954. Indeevar Bleu is on the upgrade but only one seven-year-old has won in 20 years.
Indemnity was on a four-timer when runner-up to subsequent Greatwood hero, Alexei, at Ascot on the first of this month. Emerged from that race with a 122 rating but Alexei is now on 147.
Similar collateral form boosts Viyanni, who won either side of his six lengths defeat by Lulamba at Ascot last January.
Viyanni makes a belated handicap debut off 124 today but Lulamba went on to be Punchestown champion in his age group and is now on 153.
Betdaq Betting Exchange 4.4 Indemnity, 5.8 Viyanni. Reverse forecast.
JOCKEY’S GENERAL TOP FORM
★ NAP OF THE DAY 3.35 Newbury Nicky Richards has booked Harry Cobden for Doyen Du Bar but the trainer is 0-20 at Newbury.
Twinjets has just boosted the form of the Skelton runner, Etalon, and Devon trainer Jane Williams (Javert Allen) has had three winners and four placed in her last five trips to the tracks.
But last year’s winner of this 2m handicap chase, General Medrano, has been primed for a repeat, with Ben Jones posting memorable rides lately, like last Saturday’s The Jukebox Man at Haydock. BETDAQ 5.3
