It’s over six years since Villarreal were mixing it with the big boys in the semi-finals of the Champions League and the Castellón club now find themselves plying their trade in the Spanish second division. Tonight, Julio Velázquez’s men play Ponferradina at El Madrigal Stadium in the Copa Del Rey.
Villarreal, nicknamed the Yellow Submarine, have made a good start to life in the second tier since suffering relegation at the end of last season and then suffering tragedy when their new manager, Manuel Preciado Rebolledo, suffered a fatal heart attack. They are unbeaten in three league games so far and beat tonight’s opponents 1-0 away three games ago – their first encounter.
Ponferradina won the third division two years ago but struggled against better quality teams last term. They have won one match from four games this time around but lost the other three. Although they kept Villarreal at bay last time until the 72nd minute, it is hard to see them reversing that result, especially away from El Toralin Stadium.
The Copa Del Rey is famous for throwing up freak results but Villarreal really should win and backing them on the Asian handicap -1 looks good value at 1.65 on BETDAQ, especially considering their rivals have leaked 11 goals already this season.
