A profitable weekend at last if we all stuck to the bets I suggested, though that is never the case and we all know temptation rears it’s ugly head, and more bets are struck than is sensible – or is it only me? Blackburn isn’t a four letter word but at the moment it is to me after adding them to my accumulator to watch it fail at the first hurdle (they played Friday night) – and the other three win as planned for what would have been/could have been a 9/1 accumulator, and yes, that is sour grapes! Still, as a Crawley boy I felt a bit disloyal tipping (and backing) Tranmere to win at the Broadfield Stadium, and I admit I struggled to stifle a muted cheer when the away team went 2-3 up in the 53rd minute before scoring two more for a comfortable victory though I did spend some of my money in a Crawley hostelry so at least BETDAQ layers helped the economy lol!

Sticking to my football bets (I never jinx Everton with a bet as it only ruins their chances), I did nearly get carried away with the horses though in the end, still came out on top. Betting on my tablet while standing in the crowd is always a highlight of my weekend (unless it’s raining), though I confess I did miss one of the goals. Ayr was frankly an unmitigated disaster but the heavy ground gave me a good excuse and I didn’t bet too heavily on either of my losers. Getting better than SP prices about each selection hardly soothed the wallet as Highland Colori (2nd at a BETDAQ price of 8.0, 7/1 SP), The Cheka (16th BETDAQ price 11.5 SP 9/1), both took money out of my account but at least I had the sense to stop and focus elsewhere at a very early stage of the day. A couple of short priced fancies went in at Catterick thanks to George Rooke (2.1) and Shaleek (2.0) and they were my only bets there, but I saved my very best for Newmarket which balanced out my Newbury losses thanks to Richard Hannon who is my hero of the week. I was and still am certain that he is the king of the big sales races where the prize money outstrips the horse’s abilities and thus came up with the winner of both the fillies and the colts’ versions at headquarters. Tamayuz Star was nice at BETDAQ odds of 2.4 but nothing compared to Victrix Ludorum who returned at 14/1 but who I managed to back on BETDAQ at 20.0 – happy days indeed though just like all punters, I wish I had put more on! Back on top at days end (three losers at Newbury and I missed Professor), and the bank is getting back to where it should be – time to think about another racing trip!

Looking forward and trying to add more profits, the football looks as good a place to start as any, with a full premier schedule and surely one of my trebles will have to come up sometime this season? With Arsenal playing Chelsea I will need to look elsewhere for the third section but as you would expect, I will start with Manchester United (1.7 on BETDAQ) to see off Tottenham who may need more time to gel under their new manager, while Manchester City are a bit short even on BETDAQ at 1.9 away to Fulham, but need to start getting the results if they are serious about retaining their title. Add Celtic to win at Motherwell at odds of 1.7 (BETAQ again, who else?), and we have our treble though I also fancy some single bets as well (I just can’t help myself sometimes).
Swindon are a different proposition under Paulo Di Canio and the 2.7 on BETDAQ is too tempting in my book, while the 2.4 about Tranmere to win at home to Brentford is laughable and I have to back them as well, though I don’t want to get carried away and that will do for now.

Changing sport and on to Rugby Union where I am sure someone up on the sport can explain to me why South Africa are odds on to beat Australia despite losing to the Wallabies 26-19 earlier in the month? I agree they have home advantage and I never underestimate their fighting spirit at any sport, but the 3.9 on BETDAQ for the Aussies to win is the value call in my book, and where I will throw a point – just in case?

The cricket is beyond me at present with some qualifying jiggery pokery going on so they are best left well alone, a remark that also applies to the golf when I shall watch the Ryder Cup with interest having already punted on the Americans to win but with no further money coming out of my BETDAQ account – well, that’s the theory any way.

Horseracing is still one of my big punting loves (probably pure greed because of the prices), and two bets will see me though (though there is no way I will stick to that). The Cheveley Park Stakes looks to be the best juvenile fillies race of the season so far and Maureen is a worth favourite but I have been pretty impressed with the wins of The Gold Cheongsam (a body hugging Chinese dress – I looked it up), all be it in much lower company. She has quickened up nicely to win her last three races, all with Frankie Dettori in the saddle and if he thinks she can step up in grade who am I to argue? At 8.6 the win and 2.8 the place on BETDAQ a point each way could pay off though she will have to post a career best mark to get to the first three.

For my last bet, we get another chance to see the genius of Sir Henry Cecil when the ex French trained Beauty Parlour makes her debut for the yard in the Sun Chariot Stakes from Newmarket at 3.00pm. She won her first four race including the French 1000 Guineas before finishing runner up in their Oaks over eleven furlongs, which on breeding was a step too far. Dropped back to a mile today her fitness is my main concern after over three months off, but it seems her trainer has been very patient with her (no real problems), and she is now ready to race in a fascinating contest with Illusive Kate who I see as the main danger.

This week’s suggested bets (odds correct at the time of writing):

Football Saturday
1pt Win Treble Manchester United (1.7 BETDAQ), Manchester City (1.9 BETDAQ) and Celtic (1.7 BETDAQ).
1pt Win Swindon away to Shrewsbury (BETDAQ odds of 2.7 are just too generous).
1pt Win Tranmere to beat Brentford at BETDAQ odds of 2.4

International Rugby Union Saturday
Australia to beat South Africa at 3.9 BETDAQ

Horse racing Saturday
1pt Win 1pt Place The Gold Cheongsam 2.25pm Newmarket (8.6 the win 2.8 the place on BETDAQ)
2pts Win Beauty Parlour 3.00pm Newmarket Saturday at BETDAQ odds of 3.7.
