9-2 NAP MAKES IT FOUR OUT OF SIX: Rely on Tony McCoy and Dormouse, said Daqman yesterday. The result, Dormouse (WON 9-2) scored ‘comfortably’, giving him four naps out of six, seven from the last 11. His current sequence of best bets has finished 311210131311
IS THIS A HANDICAP SNIP OR WHAT! If the handicapper is right, there’s a horse running today 17lb in front of his future rating. Daqman also expects at least one winner from Paul Hanagan at Lingfield.
Lingfield Paul Hanagan is a rare visitor to Lingfield today: he takes only about 25 mounts a year down there and, according to the trade-paper is 2-2 for William Haggas.
They combine for Sigurwana (2.10), offered at 6.2 on BETDAQ as I write: her recent first (at Newcastle) and second (Wolverhampton) under Hanagan are worth only a pound rise, according to the handicapper.
She steps up an extra furlong here and has the widest draw (12) but out there with her are her market rivals, Aegaeus (8, needs to settle) and Easter Diva (10, unfancied at 25-1 and 20-1 last twice).
Another Hanagan mount, the unexposed three-year-old Muhdiq (3.10), has won over the minimum but raced the last twice as if needing this 6f, and 5.1 this morning gives me two goes with Hanagan, which will net me 15 points if just one of them wins at my normal staking plan.
But I shall spend a point of that with a saver on Little Garcon. William Buick, 2-2 on him, is reunited with this CD winner.
Musselburgh Purcell’s Bridge (3.00) is a racing certainty, if the handicapper is to be believed; he’s put the beast up 17lb in future races for his Wetherby win last Friday.
Though he scored by seven lengths and 14, he can get away without so much as a pound more on his back, since that race was for conditional riders and cannot incur a penalty.
But there are two rises he has to overcome: he’s up a grade, and has an extra two-furlongs to travel. Oh, and he’s never reached the frame in four starts under Wilson Renwick.
These so-called good things have a habit of getting ‘beat’. The handicapper may have overreacted to a horse that got away from them in a boys’ race.
The value bet against him must surely be Everaard, four times a Musselburgh winner, returning to the course after two October runs back. Has got his ground and 8.6 on BETDAQ this morning was too big.
Towcester Tony McCoy gets off the J P McManus runner, On The Off Chance, to ride Nicky Henderson’s Springinherstep (1.20), with the market 12.0 bar two this morning, the only other offers taken up being those around 3.7 for Umadachar.
Same again in the 1.50: McCoy is on Ardkilly Witness, with a 7lb Danny boy on the McManus contender, All Systems Go. I doubt if they do.
In fact, A.P. is seen only once for J.P. He partners CD-winner Spot The Ball (2.50), who has run well (a first and a second) on his only two Towcester starts.
Like Everaard at Musselburgh, Spot The Ball is returning to his successful track after two runs back in October, the last day being on a turning downhill track (Wincanton) which wouldn’t have suited at all.
Not many like the long uphill finish at Towcester but Spot The Ball – bred for stamina – loves it, and will get a lead from Von Galen and Salut Honore.
I’m buying money today on a mediocre afternoon’s racing, hoping for a five-minute double from Springinherstep (1.20 Towcester) and Roi Du Mee (1.5), an in-form chaser at Thurles.
