ONLY ONE OF 13 NAPS OUT OF THE FRAME: Despite success with Muhdiq (WON 4-1), Roi Du Mee (WON 9-10) and Bishophill Jack (WON 11-8), all eyes were on Daqman’s nap yesterday. But Springinherstep faltered in the final strides on the notorious Towcester hill and finished second. That leaves his sequence at 3112101313112.
RELAX AND RELY ON EDINBURGH RAIDER: Today Daqman relies on a Hereford horse trekking to Musselburgh, the Edinburgh track. It’s the only ride of the day for Aidan Coleman, and the horse is as consistent as Daqman’s naps!
Hexham It’s déjà vu at Hexham, with Ferdy Murphy favourite to win the first two races as he did last year. And two winners on the corresponding card coming back for more.
The common denominator is Ockey de Neulliac (1.00), Murphy’s 2011 winner of the seller. Another going for a repeat is Panthers Run (3.30).
Somewhere along the line, we can expect some success for Nigel Twiston-Davies: he is 5-7 at Hexham and must surely strike from among his five runners today.
By all accounts, his best bet is Jasperito (2.30), already mentioned in dispatches at home, and expected to make up into a decent novice chaser.
But ‘Twiston’ is 2-2 in the handicap hurdle (2.00 Goat Castle), 2-3 in the novices’ hurdle (3.00 Special Mate), and his Brousse En Feux (3.30) headed Panthers Run in the BETDAQ market this morning.
Fontwell Interesting to see Daryl Jacob booked for one ride, Annimation (1.40) in the beginners’ chase. The front-running mare might easily get away from them, if fit after the long lay-off. But I note that the same yard runs Sapphire Rouge.
Venetian Lad (2.40) bids for a fifth course win (two over CD), again placed to advantage in a weak race. His last success came only 16 days ago and he’s up 25lb overall.
If he comes unstuck here, it may be at the hands (hooves) of Kaituna, much better than the bare form figures suggest and catching the eye in schooling at Lambourn.
The stable does particularly well on the course, notably in bumpers, so keep an eye on Beforeall (4.10), though other trainers in the race – Tizzard, Williams, in particular – do well in NH Flat races.
Yesterday we saw a favourite stuffed though 17lb well in on his future rating: Quaddick Lake (2.10) is due to go up 5lb, so is theoretically well in, though he’s a bit of a bridesmaid, placed three times now without winning since success on his seasonal debut.
Musselburgh Best card of the day. And best race of the day is the handicap chase (3.20): it sees the comeback of five-times winner Red Tanber, bid for a repeat by Fred Bojangals and a return to fences for Locked Inthepocket after a spell over hurdles.
Add to that a J P McManus raider from Ireland (One Fine Morning) and another young contender for Ferdy Murphy (Balding Banker).
But I have been impressed by the consistency and fencing skills of Relax, up from Venetia Williams’ Hereford outfit, and Aidan Coleman’s only mount of the day.
Another raiding party is that of Tim Vaughan from Welsh Wales: it’s hard to see him failing to collect from Rigidity (1.20) and Swift Escape (1.50). The one he, himself, has talked up is Swift Escape.
The handicap hurdle (2.50) is also class 3. I’m taking a punt on Unknown Rebel. The one-time Grade-1 contestant has always looked a candidate for blinkers: 15.0 on BETDAQ this morning.
Wolverhampton The Saeed Bin Suroor stable is going for a hat-trick of handicap wins at Wolverhampton. Mawhub (7.20) seemed to love it first time on Polytrack three weeks ago.
