SHAMROCK: Heads to Chester for the first day of the May meeting and there are solid Irish trained chances in the two big races.
“As she wheeled her wheel-barrow, Through streets broad and narrow, Crying, “Cockles and mussels, alive, alive, oh!”
I felt I was done up like a kipper at Navan yesterday with Alive Alive Oh who clearly is something very special and the late market moves were dramatically in her favour. So much so that the original odds-on favourite (and my NAP) Magical Dream drifted like a barge and went off second favourite.
It’s seldom that you see such a plunge in a Listed contest but the expectation from the market was that Cork maiden winner Alive Alive Oh could cope with the step-up in class and so it proved with a six length success.
So the run of naps has come to an end. Temporarily I hope.
There’s a strong Irish challenge at Chester today and in the Cheshire Oaks at 2.15 I’m sweet on the chances of the Dermot Weld trained Salhooda. Staying could well be her game as she steps up in trip after two good runs last season. She was a close second first time up at Killarney and then lost her maiden tag with a 7f win at the Curragh.
Both those races came on heavy ground but the better surface today shouldn’t trouble her on pedigree and she is fairly solid at around 4.5 at the top of the BETDAQ market.
In the Chester Cup Aidan O’Brien’s Justification looks the best of the Irish – he stayed on well to win over 1m 6f at Leopardstown last time and could still be well handicapped.
Friday’s meeting at Cork is subject to an 8am inspection on Thursday. Following heavy rain, the sprint course is currently waterlogged.
