RULER OF THE WORLD: Puts his Derby claims on the line at Chester this afternoon. Can the Aidan O’Brien colt follow up on his debut Curragh success?
It was a day of disappointment for the Irish trained runners at Chester yesterday. Salhooda (my nap) ran particularly poorly in the Cheshire Oaks beating just three home.
The MBNA Chester Vase at 2.45 is a Derby trial and Aidan O’Brien’s Ruler Of The World (pretty grand name!) is oods-on favourite with BETDAQ for the race and around 23 for the Derby itself behind Dawn Approach.
Whether he deserves to be quite as short today is debatable.
The stats tell us that the last horse to do the Vase / Derby double was none other than Shergar in 1981 – 32 years ago. By definition therefore, the winner of the Vase doesn’t have to be a great horse.
…. and if you like your stats quirky… Aidan O’Brien seems to win this in ‘odd’ numbered years !!
2007 Soldier Of Fortune
2009 Golden Sword
2011 Treasure Beach
2013 Ruler Of The World ?
So can he rule today? Yes, but he will need to step-up on the form of his narrow debut win at the Curragh – the horse he beat didn’t do much for the form in his next start. But the chances are that Ruler Of The World will leave that form behind and improve for both the extra distance and slighly better ground.
John Gosden’s Feel Like Dancing also holds a Derby entry and won well at Newbury on debut but is weak so far on BETDAQ.
Cork have abandoned the two five-furlong sprints scheduled for Friday’s meeting.
An inspection on Thursday morning showed the sprint track to unraceable after heavy rain and another race will now be divided to make up a six-race card.
