MOORE TO HAVE LAST LAUGH IN JOCKEYS’ BATTLE: Daqman reckons Richard Hughies can close on the 100 mark today but rates Ryan Moore the nap at the better offers available about Paris Rose at Newmarket from their 12 rides.
Hughsie is heading for the ton up. Though there is opportunity to airlift between meetings this afternoon and tonight, Richard Hughes is content with the full card at Donny (seven rides) and will probably be in bed by the time Ryan Moore gets away from Newmarket (five mounts) at around 9.30 tonight.
Since five of Hughsie’s mounts are favourite or nearly so, he could be close to cracking the ‘ton’, and leave Moore to wake up to an even bigger catch-up scenario, already down 96-91.
Malachim Mist (3.00) will be a hot-pot for Hughes in a race Richard Hannon has won twice before.
7.15 Newcastle With six winners in the last week, Godolphin have hit a purple patch and they seem to have this race in the big with three of the classiest in the field, Prussian dropping from the pattern with every chance.
William Haggas has a superb strike rate at Newcastle and I shall put his Floating Along (6.05) in with Malachim Mist and Prussian, and make up a yankee with a bigger offer.. but which one?
7.45 Newcastle (Gosforth Park Cup) Though stalls 7 to 15 have accounted for 15 of the 18 places in the last six years’ results, horses starting from 2 (twice) and 3 have managed to overturn the bias.
However, the percentage call is obvious, with 11 of the 18 in the frame from double-figure draws, so I shall pin my hopes in that area, with a saver from the low stalls.
But I’ll have to be careful I’m not pinning the tail on the donkey: only one favourite has won in the decade and, as a general rule, the SP also has a double-figure call.
Young horses win this sprint, so I am not inclined toward the nine-year-old Ancient Cross, though he won the last renewal off the same mark. He was a rare winner over the age of six that day. Captain Dunne won it in 2010 when he was five.
Of the high draw, Stone Of Folca wins only when fresh; Lucky Numbers is up 10lb for success in May and June; Confessional has scored once in nearly three years and that on the tight bends of Chester.
Jiroft has run some good races since coming over from Italy but needs a bit of cut in the ground and to drop a little bit in the weights. Lady Gibraltar has twice been placed at this level but has yet to win above class 3.
The wrong price is El Viento at 17.0 offers on BETDAQ this morning. Has won over 6f and should get the strong pace he needs. Did well at Newbury and York in the Spring though the ground was against him.
8.25 Chester Magic City doesn’t put back-to-back runs together, and Kingscroft has the draw that won him a race here in today’s conditions.
Since then he’s been in double-figure stalls in four visits to the track, apart from one on the soft. He’s 6.0 on BETDAQ, as I write.
8.40 Newmarket I’m napping Ryan Moore to have the last laugh. Tajheez may have been in his element on soft ground in slowly-run races, and Paris Rose, runaway winner on the firm, yet the better offer today, is preferred.
