IRISH DERBY DAY AT THE CURRAGH: SHAMROCK previews the three Group races on the card and he started the meeting well with Flying The Flag (NEXT BEST) WON 21/10 on Friday night.
No joy from the nap Leah Claire yesterday who was unplaced in the apprentice Derby but the next best obliged in the next race – Flying The Flag who, as expected, accounted for shorter priced stable companion Most Improved in the four runner International Stakes.
And now for Derby Day !!
5:15 Dubai Duty Free Full Of Surprises Railway Stakes (Group 2) (2yo, Class 1, 6f, 6 runners)
The starting point has to be Aidan O’Brien, probably. The Ballydoyle trainer has an incredible record in this race but has failed to win it for the last three seasons and Probably was the winner last year for David Wachman.
Prior to that it was only the success of Jim Bolger’s Democratic Deficit in 2004 that foiled O’Brien having a run of 11 straight wins in the race. You see where I am coming from when I say an ‘incredible record’ !!
O’Brien runs Coach House and Stubbs who come here on the back of runs at Royal Ascot. Coach House was second to No Nay Never in the Norfolk Stakes and Stubbs a disappointing beaten favourite in sixth behind impressive stable companion War Command in the Coventry Stakes.
It’s a predictable tip but Coach House brings the best form into the race and I expect him to win this with ease.
5:50 Woodies D.I.Y. Sapphire Stakes (Group 3) (3yo+, Class 1, 5f, 11 runners)
This looks a lot more competitive complicated by the fact that a lot of these sprinters are not in the best of form. The selection is the Roger Varian trained Morawij who made all to win a Listed race at Sandown last time out and can continue the excellent recent record of UK trainers in the race.
6:30 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby (Group 1) (3yo, Class 1, 1m 4f, 9 runners)
It’s another late start for the Derby and Aidan O’Brien bids for an eighth successive winner and it’s hard to think that Ruler Of The World won’t do just that. He bids to repeat Camelot’s success in the Epsom and Irish Derby’s last year and there’s every reason to think he will confirm superiority over Libertarian (now owned by Godolphin). There was a length and a half between them at Epsom (with Galileo Rock back in third) and I see no reason for that result to differ. Sugar Boy is an admirable colt but you can’t get too carried away with his chance as it was only a Group 3 he won last time at Sandown.
