BET DEC V GLOUCESTER (4 FEB)

In the end, there was no stopping Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open, even though Andy Murray could, and perhaps should, have beaten him. You can, though, take nothing away from Djokovic after the way in which he won the epic final against Rafael Nadal. He is simply awesome at the moment. As for Murray, he is getting tantalisingly close to that first major and I still think this could be the year he manages it.

As much as I enjoyed the tennis, I saw more of it than I would have liked because of my injury, although thankfully it is getting better and I’m stepping up the training all the time. The one good thing – apart from all the sport I’ve been able to watch – is that I’m on doctor’s orders not to do any housework, so no one will be more pleased than my missus when I’m back out there!

My search for a winner this week takes me to the NFL, something I’ve followed since it was first broadcast on Channel 4 longer ago than I care to remember, and Superbowl XLVI.

A lot of the boys are in to American Football. It’s on at a time when there’s little else to tune in to and us rugby players are often up late thanks to a mixture of adrenaline and caffeine, so we’re always talking about it at Sunbury and Dan Bowden probably fancies himself as the expert among us.

While the two of us agree it will be a tight game, he reckons New England Patriots will win, but my money is on the New York Giants – so there is more than my BETDAQ bet riding on this week’s punt!

The Patriots are favourites going into the game, at 1.72 on BETDAQ, with the Giants available at 2.36. I absolutely love the city of New York and have always had a soft spot for the Giants.

They beat the Patriots 17-14 in the 2008 Superbowl and some of the same players are still at the respective teams, including both starting quarterbacks, and each has the same head coach, which gives the Giants a psychological advantage. Furthermore, the Patriots’ last defeat during the regular season came at the hands of the Giants.
