COOR! DAQMAN DOUBLE WHAMMY: A bridesmaid string of 22023 returns frustrated Daqman yesterday until his Dead Man’s Hand bet brought the day to a winning conclusion.. twice! He bet Coorg (WON 1-1) and laid Megara (2nd 11-4) for a double whammy in the same race at Chelmsford.

TODAY: Daqman examines three races at Doncaster today. TOMORROW: Look out for his Saturday special search for more value against Pricewise (Daqman leads 22-8). Can he beat last weekend’s profit of 226 points.

NOW IT’S RAINING RUNNERS…

‘Good’ has reappeared in northern going descriptions. But the South is still under a cloud – we’ve lost Fontwell on Sunday already – although it depends which side of the country you’re on.

Uttoxeter tomorrow will be raced in a bog and it’s showery at Cheltenham but Huntingdon today is drying out, good to soft on the hurdles course.

The snag with the ‘good’ news is that courses like Doncaster are inundated, not with water but with runners, 106 on Town Moor today.

Big fields mean that books of around 120% are a near certainty with fixed-odds layers, but already this morning – as I swig coffee from my George Clooney machine (there the resemblance ends) – lists of offers in the BETDAQ orange include two races at 103 and 110%.

And there are favourites at 7.4, 6.6, 6.2 and 5.5 the field, best offers to varying liquidity. In races where the overall percentage is still high, dabble with some of your stake by asking for a bigger price to trap a smaller commission (2%).

I swerved the opening novices’ chase: only four of the runners had won over fences before and half a dozen were starting under claimers, trying to make a difference.

And the novices’ hurdle looked hard, with scant form and three at the front of the market separated in the orange by only 1.0 points.

… AND CLOUD COULD SAIL HOME!

2.00 Doncaster Hat–trick seeker Cyrien Star (5.5 offers), up 11lb overall, was well backed when landing his double. Remember he scored three in a row over hurdles at a similar time of the year.

One question is whether he can give a stone to Gonalston Cloud (6.4), multiple winning Pointer (five out of six) who came to Rules racing a bit late in the day at age 9, but beat five previous chase winners at Catterick last month.

Heavy-ground winner Globalisation was on the drift this morning; so, too, beaten-favourite Spending Time. Present Lodger has never won beyond 2m 4f.

2.30 Doncaster Horses often respond to a change of stables, and Neil Mulholland (form figures 21331) has booked Barry Geraghty for Peter Bowen’s CD second Chantara Rose, offered at 5.3, early mouse.

That second came with a step up to today’s trip on today’s surface, with yesterday’s runner-up Tambura in third. The winner has scored again, so impressively that she now races off 123, suggesting that Chantara Rose could be some 10lb well in today’s handicap.

It’s hard to understand why Grand National hope, Night In Milan, is running over hurdles. It’s not that he needs to keep his weight down for Aintree; he actually needs a higher chase rating to have any hope of getting in.

TOM BROWN’S (THREE-MILE) SCHOOLDAY

3.05 Doncaster It would widen Thomas Brown’s horizons if he could get 3m, but do we want to bet that he will (he failed in his two attempts over hurdles)?

Well, those efforts were in Grade-1 races and his Ascot second over fences (2m 5f) was running on against a quality winner (Le Mercurey) in novices’ Grade 2.

Saint Roque is a glass horse but did well to come back and win a race after breaking his neck in a heavy fall in 2014. Vintage Vinnie is nothing special, so Thomas Brown should come through the test.
